Man fakes his death to see how his cat reacts

It’s not very nice to stress out your cat.

And since the most recent research shows pretty compellingly that your cat will indeed eat your corpse, it’s probably not a great idea to fake your death.

Nevertheless, plenty of people have tried it for YouTube glory. And when a man who goes by the handle mao idalgo on the platform uploaded a video of his stunt in February of 2014, it earned him over 16.2 million views.

The video begins with a cat asleep in its own bed in its owner’s bedroom. Already this cat is out of the ordinary for not choosing the human bed. We’re impressed!

As the owner makes a panicked noise and falls over on the bed, the cat watches on. Hey, at least it cares – most cats are happy to ignore you no matter what noise you’re making!

And it does more than care – the cat is very curious about what’s going on. It stares at its “dead” owner for a bit and then finally gets up to assess the damage.

YouTube commenters had a number of funny replies to this, guessing what the cat might be thinking.

  • “Cat: ‘so my pet finally died'”
  • “Cat: ‘Bruh my food machine broke'”
  • “Owner: dies. Cat: ‘Imma check out which body parts of him are edible'”

As the cat rises from its bed it’s probably not planning a human feast just yet. They like it better when the body starts to rot – it’s like you’re producing your own gravy. Cats don’t really like fresh humans.

The thoughtful cat even gets up to investigate the scene instead of going back to sleep. It slowly creeps over to the bed, watching its human for signs of life.

Then, it pokes its head up before jumping on the bed.

And like all cats, it’s happy to climb on top of its owner to see just what’s going on.

But cats are intuitive enough to know when you’re breathing. It’s likely the cat doesn’t think its owner is dead, just that something is wrong and dinner might be late.

Of course, there’s someone in the room filming it all, so the cat isn’t alone and, frankly, it seems to want to know why no one is doing anything.

After a good sniff around his face, the cat eventually makes it over to the edge of the bed to confront the conscious human. It clearly wants to know what’s going on.

And while it’s normal to think the cat might be sad or afraid, we truly don’t know.

The owner posted a follow-up video to clear up any concerns that the cat was truly traumatized though. Here’s a scene from a few moments later when the kitty tries to wake up its owner by gnawing on his foot.

It’s a little early to be eating the human, so we’re going to give the cat the benefit of the doubt that it’s just trying to rouse its master.

The other person is still filming, so it’s clear the furry feline gave up on getting any human help. It looks like this cat is going to have to take matters into its own paws.
