Owners test their dogs to see if they’d protect them during a robbery

Is your dog a hero or a scaredy-cat? That was the question being asked after home security camera footage caught two dogs running sitting on the couch as a robber kicked in the front door. Instead of standing their ground and trying to chase the robber off, the two dogs are caught on film running away. So, the TV show “Inside Edition” decided to put some volunteers’ dogs to the test.

To put the dogs to the ultimate test, the program enlisted the aid of two guard dog experts, Nate Bonilla and Mike D’Abruzzo. With the permission of the dog owner, one of the men then dressed up as a burglar and burst into the home, pretending to assault the homeowner. The results were eye-opening.

In the case of Michelle Kellaher, her five-year-old Labrador Perry initially barked as the intruder before backing off. As Kellaher called for Perry to help her, he can be seen heading for the door, leaving her to fend for herself. This left Kellaher saying she was very surprised by Perry’s behavior during the break-in.

Four-year-old pit bull mix Ruby had the same reaction as Perry. When the fake intruder broke in and started assaulting her owner, Kevin Petersen, she initially jumped up on the couch where Peterson was sitting. As Peterson tells Ruby to get the intruder, she turns around and runs off. It would seem Ruby is one pit bull that doesn’t live up to the stereotypes.

The littlest dogs end up being the bravest

Unlike the previous two dogs, Frodo and Dobbie came to the rescue of their owner when their home was invaded. In the video, you can see Dobbie nip at the intruder’s ankles, while Frodo goes a step further. He gets in between his owner and the intruder and pushes him out toward the door. What a brave pair!

It just goes to show that the biggest dogs aren’t always the best to keep out intruders. Fordo and Dobbie were the smallest dogs in the video, but they were the most proactive in defending their owner from an assault. In the other two cases, the dogs initially responded to the intruder’s presence by barking, but ultimately ended up retreating in fear.

So, how do you get your dog to protect your home? Well, in the case of Frodo and Dobbie, it seems that they have an instinct to defend their owner. Maybe, their smaller size emboldens them? The other dogs decided to take the opposite tack by turning tail and running.

And while a dog can be trained to guard your home, a lot depends on your home environment. DO you have a lot of friends and family over to your home? If so, then they might think it is okay when a stranger is in the home.

This all begs the question; how would your dog react during a home invasion? Check out the “Inside Edition” video to see the surprising results of the test.
