Dogs were put to the test to see if they'd defend their owners – the results are hilarious

While some people buy dogs because they want a cuddly companion, others prefer one that’ll cuddle and serve to protect. If you’re a pet owner, you know just how loyal dogs are. Not only are they family members, but they also want to keep their humans safe. Even small dogs like Chihuahuas have a ferocious side.

But what would happen if, in real life, someone tried to break into your home while you were there? Would your cute, furry friend protect you? That’s what several people wanted to know. So, they decided to put their pets to the test. The results aren’t quite what they expected.

The test video is, well…interesting to say the least.

Inside Edition came up with the idea to stage a home invasion. The goal was to see how dogs would react if a stranger tried to harm their owner. When questioned how their canines would do, most of the participants felt confident their beloved pet would quickly come to their rescue…or would they?

You see videos like this all over the internet.

We all love “feel good” stories about dogs that pull their owners to safety from a burning house. Or how when a burglar breaks in, they scare them off. But with security cameras in place, this test, which involved three different families, went in a surprising direction.

The test begins with a man kicking in the front door of a house.

Inside, the owner has two large dogs. Their very appearance should be enough to keep the bad guys away. But, instead of raising the hair on their back, standing firm in place, and showing their choppers, they bolted…just not in the direction of the stranger. Instead, they took off like a bat out of hell, running in the opposite direction.

Now things become even more intense.

Okay, so those dogs ran away once the intruder busted into the house. But what would Perry, a big and strong yellow Labrador do if a stranger not only came into his domain but also began assaulting his human (pretend of course). Michelle Kellaher who lives in New York was eager to find out. Even a Pit Bull fails the test.

Well, that wasn’t supposed to happen.

Michelle was confident that Perry would come to her rescue. With the stage set, the action begins. A man dressed all in black kicks in the door and heads straight toward Michelle. Unbelievably, Perry also fled the scene. His owner was beyond surprised because he always seemed so protective and bold. Not so much.

Okay, the big dogs failed miserably…how would a little one fare?

Again, the same scenario plays out. But this time, an owner from Philadelphia wanted to put his small dog to the test. Maybe, just maybe, this would have a different outcome and it kind of did. Instead of running away as the big dogs did, this one stood its ground. That is until a glass plate shattered — then he too took off.

So, what’s the moral of this story? Dogs are cowards. Sure, some dogs might react in a more protective way, but for the most part, they’re more interested in receiving hugs and kisses. If you want a dog for protection, consider having one trained as a guard dog.
