Pandas finally mate after a decade of trying while zoo is closed due to pandemic

There is always some good news amidst the bad. During this coronavirus lockdown, there have been a few stories that we can look to for a laugh or encouragement. This story provides both!

Two pandas finally âget it onâ after over a decade of abstinence.
With the tragedy of the viral outbreak, positive news can be a great place to find a glimmer in the dark. Take Italy, for example. Since the outbreak has been so severe there, people have been traveling less and humans are staying indoors. This has resulted in a massive reduction in pollution levels as seen from the ESA space satellite! These positive things can provide a lift of encouragement.

This lift of encouragement is a cute and funny story of everyoneâs favorite bears.
Pandas just may be the worldâs most popular bears. These gentle beasts are visited all across the world in zoos and enclosures. One commonly unknown fact about pandas happens to be that they really struggle to breed in captivity. Wild pandas usually give birth every two years for about fifteen years. For comparison, only five cups have been born in the United States since 1990 given the fact that there are four breeding pairs across the country.
Ying Ying and Le Le got spicy for the first time in over a decade.

These two pandas are pictured above and are happy as can be. After 13 years of living together, they have finally figured out how to make it happen! They must have read the latest book about healthy panda relationships.
While not confirmed, some are saying the lack of people encouraged them to get it on!
These two giants live in the Ocean Park Zoo in Hong Kong. While this doesnât yet have any data behind it, there seems to be a correlation between the panda patty-cake and the lack of visitors. The zoo closed in January due to concerns around they coronavirus and has been closed to visitors. During that time, the two seemed to be showing more interest toward each other!

With emotions growing, the results were inevitable!
Like any true love story, the two starting âflirtingâ by doing things like playing in the water and leaving scent marking around the enclosure â how scandalous. The Ocean Park press release said:
âSince late March, Ying Ying began spending more time playing in the water, while Le Le has been leaving scent-markings around his habitat and searching the area for Ying Yingâs scent,â
The keepers couldnât be more excited!
While most people are trying to get that âkidsâ to stop doing it, these panda parents are encouraging it! They are excited about the prospects of a new pregnancy in the zoo.
âThe successful natural mating process today is extremely exciting for all of us, as the chance of pregnancy via natural mating is higher than by artificial insemination. If successful, signs of pregnancy, including hormonal level fluctuations and behavioural changes may be observed as early as late June, though there is always a chance that Ying Ying could experience a pseudo-pregnancy.â
Only time will tell if these panda lovers will become parents.
There is expected to be news late June on if the two were successful in their endeavors. Between now and then, we will have to wait and see.
