3-year-old Mabel Franks looks like any other little girl. But she’s actually a cancer-beating hero.

Mabel has been battling cancer for 2 years. She doesn’t know a life without chemotherapy, fatigue, and sickness. Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a common cancer amongst children that occurs when a bone marrow cell develops in its DNA, this little warrior has been on a long journey that most children her age have never had to face.

When Mabel was just 14 months old, her family were given the devastating news about her diagnosis. Mabel’s cancer has some pretty unpleasant symptoms, such as bone pain, fever, bruising, frequent infections, and bleeding from the gums. For such a young girl to have to go through so much pain is simply not fair.

Mable’s battle with the disease was long and by no means easy. But the little superstar managed to pull through the more difficult times.

And then COVID-19 arrived, and doctors warned that those who had compromised immune systems were more at risk of contracting the potentially fatal virus. Mabel’s parents knew their little girl had nearly overcome her cancer, and they didn’t want anything to prevent her from getting back to full health. So they made it their mission to protect Mabel like never before.

Mabel’s life was on the line, and her parents took measures to stop her from catching the virus, even pulling her older sister, Meadow, out of preschool. Joan Franks, Mabel’s grandmother, said:

“If any one of us brought (the virus) to Jim or brought it to Mabel, that could be it. We’re all kind of walking on eggshells at all times trying to make sure we’re doing all of the correct things but still trying to live.”

And then the amazing news finally came – Mabel didn’t need chemo for her cancer anymore. She could take her last necessary medication in the form of a pill.

This was a moment for celebration, COVID-19 or not. So the family’s community rallied together in the best way they could to show support, while little Mabel watched excitedly from her dad’s arms.

Wearing a “Cancer Survivor” t-shirt, Mabel waved at fire trucks that had paid a special visit to her family, and passing cars with balloons, streamers and signs reading “We love Mighty Mabel” and “Team Mabel”.

Speaking about the little girl’s special day, Joan said:

“They were going to have the biggest party in the world, and with her immune system being so low, they just couldn’t risk it.”

But it hardly mattered, because the family arranged for the party to come to Mabel in the safest way possible. A stream of cars circled the little roundabout that Mabel and her family stood at, tooting their horns and shouting words of positivity out of their windows.

Mabel’s mom, Meagan, called her community their “amazing support system”, saying that she’s “very grateful” for the love that was shown to the family by friends, family and strangers.

While not all of Mabel’s family could be with her to celebrate when she took her last chemo pill, they were still able to be there virtually on video chat to watch the milestone moment in the little girl’s life.

What an amazing superstar Mabel is! You can watch the heartwarming moment when Mabel is treated to her own socially distanced parade in the video below.
