Many teachers go the extra mile for their students. When the parents of one student had and an extreme request, the teacher was unsure if she could do it.
Luciana Lira feels a lot of satisfaction in her job as an English as a second language teacher in Stamford, Connecticut. Thanks to her, thousands of children have gained and are gaining vital skills.
Since coronavirus came to the USA, Lira has had to move her classes online. It is a challenge. Yet she is doing whatever she can for the kids that she teaches.
But Lira has also had to use her skills to help the parents of the children that she teaches. Many of her students’ parents cannot speak English. She has ensured that they can navigate through the crisis.
However, the family members of one of Lira’s students were in a terrifying situation.
Junior and his parents had fled from Guatemala years ago. They are currently seeking asylum in the USA.
Sadly, both of Junior’s parents and the child himself contracted coronavirus in late March. All three of them had to be hospitalized. But Zully, the mother, became severely ill. The doctors had to put her on a ventilator. She was also heavily pregnant.
To give the mother and the baby the best chances of survival, Zully would have to be induced into a coma. Then they would perform an emergency c-section on her.
The baby would have to be apart from the family for his own health. But they did not know of anyone who could take the infant in.
With no one else to turn to, Zully called up Lira and asked her if she could look after her son once he came into the world.
At first, Lira was confused. But when the mother explained that they were all in the hospital and would have to be quarantined afterward, Lira realized just how desperate their situation really was. She agreed to bring the baby into her home.
The doctors performed a c-section on the baby. Neysel was born five weeks premature.
After a short while in the hospital, Neysel left and was in the arms of Lira. Immediately, she loved the tiny baby.
Over the next few weeks, Lira treated the child as if he were her own.
Eventually, Junior and his father, Marvin, were released from the hospital. After 14 days of quarantine, they would be able to take baby Neysel into their home where he belonged.
Eventually, Zully started to recover.
She was alarmed when she woke from her coma and saw no sign of her baby. But the doctors explained that Junior’s teacher had taken him in and that he was healthy. Zully soon called up Lira to thank her for taking in her newborn. Lira said that she was happy to see the baby’s mother recovering.
Eventually, Zully left the hospital. After quarantine, she will finally be able to hold her baby in her arms.
As a sign of their appreciation, the parents have named Lira as the baby’s godmother. They are incredibly grateful for Lira, who took on a huge responsibility in their time of need.
How many people would take in a newborn baby from a family who had coronavirus? Most would refuse such a thing. But Lira just saw it as part of her duty as a human and a teacher to Junior. She is a truly amazing person.
