Parents want more privacy – so they build a tiny village and give each teen a house
The teens in this family are the envy of all of their friends. Could you build your kids something this cool?
Every teenager wants their own independence. But they also want their parents to pay for everything. It’s a situation that leaves everyone at home unhappy. Unless you’re this family.
Keli and Ryan Brinks have raised two children together. Like most parents, they discovered that when their eldest child, Lennox, turned 13, it was like living with a monster.
Their son, Brodey, was two years younger than their daughter. So they knew that the problem would become twice as bad in just a few years.
At first, they tried to put up with their teenaged children. But after a while, they became desperate for a solution. That’s when they first came up with the idea of living in a tiny home community with their kids.
They realized that instead of living in one big home, they could buy a bunch of little homes, giving everyone privacy while still being on the same plot of land.
So five years ago, the Brinks, who lived in Michigan in a 2,200 square foot home, purchased a 21 acre stretch of land down in Kentucky and headed south.
They all started creating a tiny village. Each kid would have their own home, while the parents would share.
The land cost them $57,000. The six tiny homes that they put on their land altogether cost $20,000.
Keli and Ryan live in the largest of the tiny homes. It is 280 square feet. Inside, it also has features that make it look more spacious than it is, such as vaulted ceilings.
The kitchen is also a respectable size, with lots of cabinets and a good amount of counter space. There’s also a full-sized fridge.
Next to this fridge is a ladder. At the top of this ladder is the parents’ bed.
And underneath the bed area is a bathroom that’s large enough to fit a full-sized bathtub.
Lennox and Brodey each live in their own 160-foot tiny homes. The exteriors of these homes have different appearances. Brodey’s looks like a mini barn. It also has a nice sized porch.
Inside Brodey’s house is a TV, a sofa and a king-sized bed in a small loft area.
Lennox’s tiny home looks just like a mini version of a typical suburban home.
The interior of Lennox’s home is painted lighter than Brodey’s.
However, Brodey and Lennox’s homes don’t have their own bathrooms. Instead, another building has two bathrooms.
This building also has a guest bedroom for when friends and family are staying together. Lastly, there’s also space for a washer and dryer in this building.
Next to the bathroom/guest bedroom house is a pool house. This is like a communal lounge for everyone to gather, play games and have fun.
But at the back of this pool house is, as the name of the house implies, a swimming pool. This pool is 18 feet by 33 feet. It is also eight feet deep.
Lastly, there’s one really tiny home (even for tiny home standards.) It’s just 64 square feet. It serves as an office.
The land also has a chicken coop and other agricultural areas. This helps the family achieve their goal of being sustainable.
Very few families in America live like this. But the Brinks are all super happy with what they’ve created. Could your family do this?
