Parents set up tiny homes in their backyard for their teen daughters

As parents, we never stop worrying about our children whether they are two or twenty years old.

At the same time, both parties realize at some point that it is good for the children to pursue their autonomy and move out of their parents’ home.

Still, having your child living miles away from you just adds extra stress, while it makes it impossible to keep an eye on them, especially while they are still teenagers.

What if we could combine autonomy and independence with living close to each other?

This is what Matt and his partner, Linda, thought when the time for their teenage children was approaching to leave the parental nest.

Matt and Linda used to live across the street from each other.

They were both single parents and they both had teenage children when they got together.

Once they decided to move in together, they realized neither of their homes could fit them all- adults and teenage kids- so they looked to buy a new property.

Three years ago, they came across a fixer-upper home with a large backyard, and they figured it would be ideal for them.

With some work, it would easily become a sustainable, reusable property, and in the yard, they could fit two container homes for their older daughters.

Indeed, once the main house was ready, they contacted Alternative Living Spaces to have something built for them.

They wanted two container homes that would host their teenage daughters for the next couple of years, probably until they decided to leave for college or move into their own home.

Some years later, the homes could host Matt’s and Linda’s elderly parents, as he explained, which is much better than an assisted living facility.

“The girls can live in there but we both have aging sets of parents that are getting older and we thought, well, if we had these storage containers, we have this multi-generational setup that we could put them out there,” Matt explained to Tiny House Giant Journey.

Each 340-square-foot container home cost $60,000, adding an extra $10k cost to get it fully furnished.

The homes were built and then brought to the family’s yard and set up within four hours, which was amazing.

The girls, Maddie and Ashley, loved their new homes and they enjoyed their independence, while at the same time they could have their parents around in case they needed something.

A while later, Ashley decided to leave for college, leaving her tiny home empty. But it wasn’t for long.

You see, soon Maddie’s friend Braedon started renting it because he needed his own space for a short period of time.

Both homes have a living room, a fully equipped kitchen, a nice bathroom with all the necessities, and a bedroom.

They both come with a closet and lots of extra storage space, which is great for these young guys.

Maddie couldn’t be happier since she’s enjoying her independence while staying close to her best friend- her dad.

Would you consider such a setup for your kids?
