A park worker noticed a car parked for an oddly long time.

Luckily, he followed his urge to double-check it.

We are surrounded by everyday heroes: sanitation workers who make sure that our streets are clean and healthy; utility workers who make sure we have access to water, electricity, and fuel; and park officers who tend to green spaces where we unwind, exercise, and meet people.

And every once in a while, the dedication of these workers pushes them to extraordinary things. That was the case with Randy Turner who is being hailed a hero after saving a patron’s life.

Turner has been working as a park worker for over two decades.

And in this line of work, he has successfully combined the two things he loves the most: the great outdoors and socializing.

“I like being outside, the outdoors,” Turner told FOX 5.

“I like the public use them after we leave. Use them for sporting, and events, and parties. I like meeting people when they come by and they like to talk and vent to you why you’re working.”

Turner was popular amongst the patrons of the park.

As a regular, he is familiar with the people who frequently come by and spend their time there.

“The regular park patrons that come every day or once a week would know me by name,” he told the news outlet.

One particular local caught Turner’s eye.

The woman had been a park patron ever since Turner began working at the park three years ago. Turner remembered her for her kindness. He had once spotted her handing out bottles of water and Gatorade to the homeless during the hot summer months.

Fast forward to the present.

It was a hot day. In the middle of the sweltering afternoon, right after lunchtime, Turner noticed something strange going on in the parking lot.

The woman had been parked in the same spot since that morning.

He knew the woman often stayed in her car. Worried about her wellbeing amid the hot temperatures, he decided to check on her to see how she was doing.

At first, Turner peered into the back window of the car. He noted that the seats were up and he couldn’t see anybody sitting on the seats. For a moment, he assumed the car was empty.

But something didn’t feel right about the whole situation so he decided to take a closer look.

He peered into one of the windows again.

The car windows were dark so he had to lean in close to get a better look.

That’s when he saw the familiar woman lying behind the seat.

She did not look well and Turner quickly called for paramedics. It turns out the woman had been having a “medical episode” in her car.

Thankfully, the woman was saved just in time thanks to Turner.

“If anybody was going to do that, it would be Randy,” Steve Pinch, his supervisor, shared in the city’s Twitter post.

“He cares the most about his park patrons. He’s really involved in people who visit his park, and it doesn’t surprise me at all.”

Turner was grateful to have been of help.

“It makes me feel good. I love helping people out and that’s just what I love doing. And it made me feel really good that she’s here today and she’s able to be with her family again,” he shared with FOX 5.
