Visit from patient's dog spurs a remarkable improvement in his grim diagnosis

Visit From Patientâs Dog Gives Him New Life Again
For those who donât own a dog, it is sometimes difficult for them to understand the intense bond that can form between pet and owner. There is a lot of evidence to show that these canine companions can actually make positive physical changes within an ownerâs body. Like lowering blood pressure.
Flavio Facing A Difficult Time

One dog owner, Flavio Santos was hospitalized with cancer. He had been in the hospital for several weeks and during that entire time, the one thing that he talked about the most was his dog. It seemed like that was all that was on his mind.
This was a trying time for Flavio as he was dealing with cancer itself and the effects of the treatment. Then not having his best friend to comfort him was just one extra misery.
The Staff Catches On

The nursing staff realized just how much Flavio was missing his dog, and how unhappy he was over this. They came up with a plan to reunite the two. Arrangements were made to bring his dog Agadir to the hospital for a visit
A Heart Warming Reunion

While it was expected that Flavio would have a favorable reaction to seeing Agadir, it was heartwarming to see how happy the dog was to see him.
The Outcome

Everyone expected a short time of happiness for Flavio but they did not expect the effects. Following his visit with his precious dog, the doctors began to see some significant improvement in Flavioâs health.
Dr. Rodrigo Tancredi said : âHe was conscious, oriented and talking.â. What was just as remarkable is that the improvement continued gradually and remained.
New Hope

As a result of his reunion with his dog that has led to his improvement, there is a chance that Flavio may be able to leave the hospital.
An Interesting Demonstration
Pets and particularly dogs are increasingly being put into roles for helping humans with various medical conditions that they may be experiencing. The was an excellent demonstration host by TEDxUMassAmherst.

The hostess had the audience begin by viewing several very sad photos that covered several different circumstances. Then after this, she asked the audience to hold on to what they were feeling.
Next, she showed them pictures of different dogs.

Then after this, she asked the audience to compare what they were now feeling to what they had been feeling about the sad photos.
She went on to talk about what a bond means. This is a force or feeling that unites people. She says that there is a bond between humans and animals that affects them, emotionally, psychologically and physically.
It has been proven that there are decreases in blood pressure, anxiety, and stress.
Therapy Dogs and Service Dogs

There are differences between therapy dogs and service dogs.
Therapy dogs are owned by one person who goes through intense training then goes out into the community to help people.
Service dogs belong to a person with a specific need and the dog has been trained to help with that need for that person.
Although Flavioâs dog may not officially fit into either of these categories he gave Flavio exactly what he needed. The love, devotion, and companionship that was nursing him back to better health.
