Do you consider Amazing Grace to be a Christmas song? The members of Pentatonix sure do, as it’s the lead single for their new Christmas album.

Many people disagree over what is and isn’t Christmassy. After all, so much stuff is labeled as “festive” nowadays.

For instance, many British people consider songs that were at the top of the UK charts at Christmas time to be Christmas songs.

That means that in Britain, some people are adamant that Michael Jackson’s Earth Song, The Spice Girls’s 2 Become 1 and Rage Against The Machine’s Killing in the Name are Christmas songs.

The justification for this is because they were all the most purchased singles during the week of Christmas one year.

This may sound crazy to many Americans. But the band Pentatonix seems determined to create a similar kind of controversy in the good old USA.

The band is about to release a Christmas album. And their lead single is a cover of a Christmas song. Or is it?

The cover is of the hymn Amazing Grace.

And while people will argue over whether Amazing Grace should be released as a Christmas song, the good news is that the cover sounds amazing. It also has a great video supporting it.

The video opens with the singer Matt Sallee looking into the camera in a forest and singing, “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound.”

As he sings, the other members walk up behind him.

The other members begin singing, giving the band their distinctive acapella sound.

Then the shots cut to each of the members singing the lyrics. The shots grow more diverse, with singers sitting next to a fountain or in front of an ocean vista.

Then the band members walk up a set of stairs and to a greenhouse-like structure.

The shot cuts to the members inside this structure, which is lined with pews.

The video ends with the singers back at the first location.

This video appeared on YouTube on the 5th of November. It soon went viral. In less than a week, it has gained over 1.8 million views. It also has more than 127,000 likes and 6,900 comments. People have been saying things like this:

With a reaction like that, it looks like the Pentatonix Christmas album will be a huge success.

The album that Amazing Grace appears on is out on the 13th of November. The band hasn’t released the tracklisting ahead of time. But seeing as the title is We Need a Little Christmas, it’s likely that many of the other songs will definitely be very Christmas themed.

And Pentatonix’s band members are no strangers to Christmas music.

In fact, We Need a Little Christmas will be the band’s sixth Christmas album to date. That’s a lot of Christmas albums for a band that’s less than 10 years old!
