Annoyed residents plant flowers in potholes as a creative (and beautiful) protest
Usually, when you hear the word ‘protest’, the first thing that comes to mind is a huge crowd of people holding cards and shouting their causes. Protests are typically loud and huge.
In North America and parts of Europe, people are protesting in a very different way.
Instead of people filling up the streets, they are doing pothole gardening. Basically, people are filling street potholes with flowers.
They were fed up with their cities’ streets.
Potholes are neglected and they can cause potential problems for people who use the roads. For example, cyclists and bikers can end up getting injured. Wheels could blow out and that can be dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians.
Protesters use pothole flowers to create a temporary solution.
Anton Shurrmans, a resident of Brussel, chose to highlight the terrible condition of several roads in his area. He took a small plastic, bag of flowers, and oil and started planting on the road.
Paige Breithart did the same thing. Tired of the countless potholes on their cities’ streets, she gathered all her tools and went around the neighborhood planting.
The protest made neighborhoods pretty.
With flowers, anything will look beautiful. And that includes streets filled with potholes.
Even though they are beautiful, some people are concerned about safety.
They think that drivers might be surprised to see plants in the middle of the road. Once they swerve to avoid them, it’ll put motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians at risk.
The results are still good.
The potholes have gained attention. And as a result, cities have started repairing and filling them.
Even the internet was impressed with the protesters’ creativity.
On social media, people are expressing how amused they are about the idea.
Apart from live and real flowers, many modern creatives use other mediums in making their pothole art.
Some of them used mosaic tiles while others chose multi-colored yarn for their pieces. There were people who used embellished clay, too.
For example, when Life of Dad uploaded the photos of his ‘passive-aggressive way of getting his town to deal with potholes, the internet showed support right away.
One Facebook user commented on his post:
“Great way to deal with potholes. Talk about thinking outside the box.”
Another one said:
“Love it! I don’t. Want them to deal with the pot holes anymore. Why not a beautiful garden in the road”
There was also this Facebook user who didn’t agree that his way was passive-aggresive. She shared:
“Creatively positive, not passive aggressive. Passive aggressive would have been making the pot holes Bigger….. Lololol”
Protests don’t always have to be loud and full of violence.
The people who started this trend were able to prove that protests don’t always have to end with protesters getting injured. There are still ways to get the attention of other people without. We just need to be a bit more creative about it.
