Mother brings newborn into work then unknowingly stars in photo seen by millions
Needless to say, raising a child can be a darn hard affair, wrought with a plethora of painstaking challenges. Juggling domestic and work-life can be a struggle, especially when continued maternity leave isn’t an option and nobody’s home to watch the child. Working mothers truly have it rough.
Meet Melody Jett Blackwell of Tennessee, mother of a bubbly newborn. Due to existing circumstances, Melody needs to come into work. Fortunately, her employers allow infants. Although now, things clearly aren’t as simple as they were months ago.
Melody began bringing in her newborn to work once a week. She has a fairly fast-paced work life as an assistant at Maryland Farms Chiropractic. She’s seemingly mastered the often overwhelming, complicated art of simultaneously raising a child while working, literally.
One day, unknowingly, Melody’s boss took a quick photograph of her on the phone and working with child in hand.
She truly does make it look easy. This is the epitome of multitasking. Her boss proceeded to upload the photo on social media, quickly garnering thousands and thousands of likes and interactions. As it stands, the image has over 2,500 likes and 1,300 shares on Facebook. Melody didn’t even know about the image until it exploded virally.
Melody told Love What Matters about her situation, “When I had the baby, my boss was very generous, giving me 3-month maternity leave. After that, she has allowed me to work from home most of the week and only come into the office once a week. She allows me to bring my baby with me when I come in so that we can continue to bond and breastfeed.”
All things considered, that’s a fairly good deal for a struggling, working mother.
Other American workplaces might not be so accommodating. Fortunately, Melody’s child is safe and sound in Melody’s arms, even while working rigorously.
Although her workplace should be commended for their accommodation, ideally, mothers should be afforded longer periods of time off, in general. It’s a rather ridiculous predicament when a child spends much of its infancy in an office.
Melody went on to tell Love What Matters, “I know not every office and work environment is conducive for children and babies, but I think more places can be more flexible than they are currently.”
Melody continues, “It helps tremendously with the cost of daycare. I hope that more moms in the future will get the opportunity that I have to get to spend every day with my baby but also contribute to the family income.”
Maybe these viral photos will push towards longer maternity leave for working mothers. At the least, maybe more and more workplaces can become increasingly accommodating of childbirth.
Easing a mother’s mental and physical burden, as well as relieving some of the financial stress can ultimately result in a healthier childhood for any newborn. Regardless, the images of Melody with her child are undeniably cute, demonstrating this mother’s incredible strength and resilience amid a complicated period of her life.
