People sheltering at home are passing the time by Photoshopping their cats faces onto bees
Some of us have been sheltering in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic for months and it’s pretty clear we’re getting bored. Really bored. So bored that things we might have rolled our eyes or shaken our heads at back in January are now hilarious to us.
Need proof? How about the viral phenomenon of Photoshopping a cat’s head onto the body of a bee. There’s no reason that should feel like a worthwhile thing to do with one’s time, but…well, here we are.
What can we say? We’re easily amused these days.
It all began with a random post on Reddit (as so many things do) less than 2 weeks ago. The user simply said “My sister keeps photoshopping her catβs face onto bees” and uploaded this photo:
That sister is Jessy Hanczaryk and her cat’s name is Millie. And she’s having a hard time believing she started a viral phenomenon:
βI saw someone posted them on Facebook and someone else posted them on Instagram!β she told The Dodo. βI honestly had no idea that people would like them so much.β
Now, 126K likes later, catbees are an undeniable part of our lives. And they are fantastic.
People around the world are now trying to one-up each other.
Here’s a catbee named Salem, as seen from the side. A Twitter user made it after she had seen a post on Instagram.
No social media platform is safe from the hybrid catbees.
Frankly, we’re partial to the cats whose faces don’t match a bee body at all.
An Instagram user summed it up succinctly with a photo of her own catbee:
“Turning your cat into a bee is a thing at the moment…”
That’s really all there is to say. It doesn’t make sense, but we’re doing it anyway!
No matter how ridiculous a catbee photo is, it is inevitably accompanied by comments that it is premium content.
“This is the content I needed in my Instagram feed tonight,” said one user upon seeing this photo:
Things look about the same over on Twitter, although people are getting a bit more creative about their bug bodies:
And before you call the catbee an abomination, just note that some people are going out of their way to think about where they fit into our fragile ecosystem.
As Redditor u/-WhatisLife_ said (presumably in the voice of famed nature documentarian Sir David Attenborough):
“Ah yes, the catbee. The catbee is a very rare sub-category originating from the feline species and the European common honey bee species. In the wild we can see the catbee collecting pollen from flowers and going after mice due to their predatory instincts, this very special bee can also live in domestic environments. In domestic environments the catbee will lounge around and knock things over. Still there are many things that our scientists and researchers do not know about This very uncommon species and they are working to multiply the number of catbees.”
That sounds correct to us.
And before you criticize people for having too much time on their hands remember that, yes, it’s true. Those of us who are following the recommendations of experts are at home with realatively little to do compared to our lives three months ago.
Frankly, we can’t be doing something genuinely productive every moment we’re awake, and the harmless catbee is simply one manifestation of our quarantine-induced, easily-triggered sense of humor.
