Some people always order sandwiches with no pickles. Well, if you asked for that at this store, then you’d be left with just a small salad or pile of meat and cheese.

The sandwich as we know it dates back to the 18th century. In the 250 years since people started regularly combining two slices of bread with meat/cheese/vegetable fillings, sandwiches have taken the world by storm.

But this restaurant claims to have revolutionized the sandwich in a really unusual way.

In New Jersey, there’s a sandwich shop called Elsie’s. And for a while, Katherine Cohen and Chad Jordan, the store’s owners were in a pickle. How could they get more customers, they wondered. There had to be something!

Cohen, also faced a separate issue. Her mother developed diabetes. So she needed to create meals for her that involved less sugar. Cohen’s mother loves pickles, so the daughter started serving the mother sandwiches where pickles replaced the bread.

One day, Cohen’s mother was eating her special sandwich in the store when another customer noticed it. The customer was so taken with the unusual sandwich that they asked for one just like it.

And that was when Catherine and Chad realized that “being in a pickle” was the solution as well as the problem.

They would serve sandwiches with a twist. Instead of bread, they’d get some gigantic pickles, hollow out the centers and stuff them with sandwich fillings. And so the pickle sandwich was born!

You have to credit Katherine and Chad for their creativity. Some people love pickles so much that they literally eat a whole jar in one sitting or cool down on a hot day with a popsicle pickle. So why wouldn’t people want to eat sandwiches bordered not with bread but tangy, crunchy pickle!?

Amazingly, this idea was a hit. Customers from miles around flocked to Elsie’s to try the pickle sandwiches for themselves. And the word of mouth kept on spreading. Some people buy the sandwich because it’s a novelty, but others really just love them for what they are.

And Katherine and Chad have only expanded their pickle based offerings since the sandwich took off. Now their entire menu revolves around the pickle.

Customers can even order versions of the sandwich where the contents are wrapped around a thin slice of pickle, almost like a California roll.

In fact, the demand is almost too large for Katherine and Chad to keep up with. Their sandwiches are so popular that there are often lines going out of the door to the sandwich shop.

This is a true “only in America” invention. Some people might mock those who want a sandwich with pickles instead of bread, but who are they to judge? If you like the taste of it, why not enjoy it? It’s healthier than a normal sandwich, after all!

People probably mocked The Earl of Sandwich when he started talking about his new bread and meat invention all those years ago. But who has had the last laugh?

Who knows, in 250 years time, everyone might be eating pickle sandwiches like they’re the most normal meal in the world.
