Rescue piglet and kitten become best friends and comfort each other in their time of need

Laura the piglet and Marina the kitten are like two peas in a pod, but that hasn’t always been the case. Without the efforts of Santuario Igualdad in Santiago, Chili, both of them would have probably died. Now, they both spend their time together providing each other comfort.

Here is the story of how a rescue pig and an abandoned kitten were able to find each other, and, against the odds, become best friends.

The pair ended up at Santuario Igualdad

Santuario Igualdad is a refuge shelter for farm animals. Their goal is to give the animals they help a place to live and thrive. An interspecies equality sanctuary, Santuario Igualdad provides all of the veterinary and nutritional care that the animals at the shelter need. And while shelter staff does try to attend to the animals’ emotional needs, that is sometimes harder than it sounds.

Laura, the piglet, came to the shelter after being born to a breeder pig. Destined for the slaughterhouse, her life was saved when she was rescued by some activists. Suffering from anxiety, Laura was so nervous when she first arrived at Santuario Igualdad that she was shaking uncontrollably.

Marina, on the other hand, had been brought to the shelter after being abandoned by her mother. Sickly and weak, she couldn’t see due to the pus that filled her eyes. More than likely she would have died if she hadn’t been found and brought to the sanctuary by a kind stranger.

Comforting each other

Rescued only a few days apart, Marina was the first to notice the fearful Laura. Realizing that the tiny piglet needed comfort, Marina took it upon herself to do so. Soon, the two were snuggling up to each other, sleeping and cuddling.

The friendly kitten was able to get Laura to calm down and the two soon became best friends. From there it was only a matter of getting to know each other better, and develop a level of trust between them. Before the shelter staff knew it, the two were hugging, cuddling, and giving each other kisses.

Best friends for life

Now, the two spend all of their time together and serve as an example that even though you might be different than someone else, it doesn’t mean you can’t show them love and compassion. For more on Santuario Igualdad, visit the organization’s Facebook page.
