Raising a child can be stressful.

You have to worry about feeding them, sheltering them, loving them, but mainly to keep them alive. But sometimes, parents need help from their children too.

Five-year-old Lexi Shymanski knew she had to save her mother’s and brother’s life.

On a calm Monday in June, a tired Angela Shymanski drove her family through the Canadian Rockies in Alberta.

Out of concern for her children, Lexi and her infant brother, Peter, the young Canadian mother, decided to pull over at a nearby rest stop. However, it was too difficult to stay awake.

The car then crashed down a 40-foot-deep embankment on the side of the road, causing several life-threatening injuries.

The traumatizing incident left mother and son significantly injured—Angela had broken her back, and Peter’s brain was bleeding. The stakes were not only high, but they were a matter of life and death. Luckily for the Shymanski family, little Lexi, who didn’t receive any serious injuries, immediately jumped into action.

Lexi unbuckled herself from her booster seat, opened the door, and trekked up the steep embankment to look for help.

Knowing fully well that her mother and brother’s life were in her hands, Lexi climbed up the steep terrain, walking over sticks, roots, and rocks barefoot, without any climbing or safety gear. She then reached the side of the road and flagged down, passing drivers for help.

It looks like bravery knows no age.

Luckily for the Shymanski’s, Lonnie and Jeremia Jurek saw Lexi on the road – much to their bewilderment.

“Seeing her come out from a real, large embankment,” Lonnie said in an interview with Inside Edition, “I’m like, ‘Jeremiah, we have to stop!” Jeremiah still couldn’t believe what he was seeing. “She was standing on the edge of the road and just trying to get traffic to stop,” he said, “she was screaming and motioning to traffic to stop.” The couple followed Lexi down the embankment, and when they saw the wreck, they called the paramedics.

Angela and Peter were both airlifted to the hospital, where they stayed for 19 days. Angela, who was also a swim teacher, broke her back in two places. As for Peter, the baby needed neurosurgery to drain excess blood from his brain from the crash.

Thanks to Lexi’s efforts, both mother and son survived and are making a full recovery.

Once confined to a wheelchair and now walking with a cane, Angela has expressed unwavering gratitude for her daughter’s actions. “This little girl is the reason that I am alive, and that my baby’s alive and that my family’s together.” Lexi’s father, who wasn’t at the accident, was moved by her daughter’s unimaginable bravery. “I just started bawling pretty much,” he said tearfully to Inside Edition. “I couldn’t believe what she’d done.”

The Edmonton police rewarded Lexi with a bronze medal for her bravery.

Children are more clever than most adults give them credit for. They give parents reason to live and, quite literally, save their lives as well.
