Sweet rescue Pittie and blind baby calf are inseparable

“Rescue them all big or small!” – Saving Grace Animal Society

For the hearts behind Saving Grace Animal Society in Alberta, Canada, to be able to “rescue, rehabilitate and re-home any animal in need” is something that they are proud of.

No matter what type of animal, big or small, they will rescue it and do their very best to ensure that they get another chance in life.

Most of their animal rescues immediately find their forever home. Just last year, however, this shelter has seen one of the most unlikely friendships to have ever developed.

Meet little Heaven – a beautiful blind 2-month-old calf who was rescued by Saving Grace Animal Society.

Aside from being blind she also had an infection from a puncture wound.

Heaven was from a dairy farm in the same location as the shelter. She was different; she gets nervous when she’s around other animals. The shelter understood, so they created a small pen just for her.

There, she met Sweetpea.

This Pitbull may look tough, but she really is a softie. That’s why the shelter chose Sweetpea as her name, after all.

She is actually the shelter’s ambassador but she wasn’t born there.

This sweet Pittie had been through a lot in her life before being rescued, and she has her own story to tell.

She used to be a bait dog. She didn’t even know what it meant to be cared for and loved until she was rescued.

When the rescuers found the poor Pittie, she was in terrible shape. She was full of lacerations but her eyes showed that she wanted to live. She wanted love.

Sweetpea and Heaven formed a deep connection.

“They took to each other and immediately bonded,” said Erin Deems, Saving Grace Animal Society’s executive director, told in her interview with CBC News.

Heaven opened up to Sweetpea and the sweet Pittie took her in and showed her that she was safe.

“Love knows no species boundaries. When two animals can bond like that, it’s pretty heartwarming.”

They were always together and Sweetpea loved to groom Heaven. Like a big sister, she never failed to groom her little baby sister.

An update from last March 2019 said that they had to create a custom cart for Heaven.

It has a built-in-halo that will help her to get around the farm.

Of course, Sweetpea was always around to assist little Heaven. For 3 months, they were inseparable! Their friendship was amazing.

Sadly, though, last June the shelter posted a heartbreaking update.

“Despite our greatest efforts and more love given than we ever could have imagined. Heavens shoulder joint had fused and too much arthritis in the joint to keep her comfortable. The most humane thing we could do is let her go.”

It was a very painful day for all of them especially for Sweetpea who lost her best friend.

The shelter thanked everyone who had shared their love and support for Heaven who is no longer in pain.

Until today, their beautiful story is still being shared.
