Pittie who was on shelter’s euthanasia list has helped mom save over 200 rescue pups
Many breeding dogs spend their life confined to a cage. Only being brought out to breed and then being put back into their tiny cage with no bed, toys, or companionship.
Kilo is one such dog.
After his breeders were done with him, they abandoned him to a kill shelter
Before meeting Candice Miller, the pit bull had little hope of a life outside of the shelter. A volunteer, Miller spent time at the shelter where Kilo was located, always feeling sorry for him.
She already had three dogs and wasn’t quite ready for another dog.
After two months at the shelter, Kilo was put on the euthanasia list.
Miller always held out hope that he would be adopted, but on the final day, he was moved to the holding area before being taken to the kill room. Getting in her car, she rushed to the shelter to save him.
“The rest was history,” Miller said. “Kilo came into my life at a point where I needed him the most … We both had been through some bad stuff, but together we are absolutely happy and healthy.”
It was a few days later, after Miller had brought home an orphaned puppy, that she how truly special Kilo was. Initially, Miller couldn’t get the little puppy, named Penny, to take a bottle. Then she decided to try something. She put the bottle on Kilo’s stomach.
His body heat warmed the formula enough so that Penny thought she was nursing. It was at this point that Miller knew what Kilo was meant to do.
Kilo has fostered an estimated 200 puppies
Since that fateful day, Kilo has gone on to foster around 200 puppies. Kilo and Penny also remain best friends. Even though Penny has now grown into an adult, she still loves Kilo.
Kilo also affected Miller. “He really made me passionate about rescues. He just takes care of them.”
And Kilo can’t get enough of his foster puppies.
He loves to play with them and has the patience to spare for all of them. He has taken it upon himself to show them how to be a dog. Whatever the reason, Kilo has become a great foster dad. Maybe it was all of the puppies he never got to spend time with as a breeding dog.
Since that day when Kilo found his calling, Miller has moved her family to a 12-acre property in Oregon. Now, Miller and her extended family have more room to grow and she can take more easily take on various fosters that rotate in and out of her life.
