Teen pizza shop manager drives 225 miles to deliver special pizza to dying man at 2:30am
When we witness or experience a random act of kindness from someone we know or even a stranger, it will remain in our hearts, forever.
Just like what Julie Morgan of Indianapolis shared on Facebook, which is about her husband, Rich and their favorite pizza from a store in Battle Creek, Michigan – Steve’s Pizza.
What made this pizza extra special?
Julie and Rich lived in Battle Creek just for 2 years but Steve’s Pizza has been their all-time favorite.
Julie revealed why it is special for both of them.
She recounted how Rich would bring home pizza from Steve’s every payday during those years when they were still living in Battle Creek.
“25 years ago we lived in Battle Creek, MI. We were young and money was tight but every pay day, Rich would pick up Steve’s Pizza for dinner. I can’t possibly describe how delicious this pizza is – but several moves and all these years later, it is still the gold standard and we’ve never found a better pizza yet,” she wrote in her Facebook post.
Years after those old-but-gold times, they were planning a trip back to the city and of course, to their beloved Steve’s Pizza. However, something unfortunate happened.
That much-awaited weekend getaway turned into a trip to the ICU.
Their trip had to be canceled as Julie needed to take Rich to the hospital – he was in the ICU for five days. They found out that his battle with cancer was lost.
They went back home and Rich would have to be placed in hospice care.
“Rich and I recently planned a weekend getaway to Michigan to celebrate my birthday. We talked about seeing the leaves and the lakeshore, but that was secondary to our planned visit to Steve’s. Instead, I took Rich to the ER where he landed in ICU for five days, and where we learned the news that his valiant cancer battle was coming to an end,” Julie narrated.
It is undeniably a tough experience for their family.
As they were not able to go back to their favorite pizza shop, Steve’s Pizza was the one that went to them.
Thanks to the manager of Steve’s Pizza, Dalton Shaffer, for making it possible.
Steve’s Pizza is a takeout only pizza joint but because of Dalton’s kindness, the pizza came to Morgan’s doorstep.
Dalton unhesitatingly made a three-and-a-half-hour drive to Indianapolis to bring pizza to the couple.
Kindness can really do tremendous things at any time, anywhere.
It all started when Julie’s father, David Dalke secretly called Steve’s. He certainly knew how important that pizza is for her daughter and her husband.
According to M Live, he said,
“They would always say there’s no one that measures up to Steve’s Pizza.”
He explained the couple’s situation and all he hoped for was that the restaurant might be willing to send a card or a text.
Dalton did something beyond that simple hope.
Dalke recounted what Dalton responded when he told him about it.
“He said, ‘Well, what kind of pizza do they like?’”
Upon knowing the situation and their location, Shaffer confirmed to deliver the pizza by himself after the shop closed. This is despite the fact that their restaurant doesn’t deliver.
He unhesitatingly made a 450-mile round trip just to bring the two 16-inch pizzas with pepperoni and mushrooms, to the couple who’ve been longing to taste it again, together.
The kindness did not end there.
Dalton made it to Morgan’s home at 2:30 a.m. According to Julie, the kind pizza guy wouldn’t accept money for a hotel. He turned right around and went back to his place so he could get to work the next day.
All the things that Shaffer wholeheartedly did for the Morgan couple are priceless.
Julie took to Facebook to express her deep gratitude to Dalton.
“I am beyond overwhelmed and humbled by this act of genuine kindness. Dalton brought our family so much joy – and the best pizza in the world – at a really difficult time. While “thank you” hardly seems adequate – from the bottom of my heart, thank you, Dalton from Steve’s Pizza in Battle Creek, MI for making your epic middle of the night pizza delivery,” she penned.
Everything is paying off for Dalton. Steve’s Pizza is booming and has been gaining nice words from many people across social media.
This story has proven that whatever challenge that comes our way, as long as kindness exists, we can surpass all of them with a happy heart.
