Police dog used to finding weapons helps couple by sniffing out wedding ring on beach

There’s lots of objects we’re all terrified of losing. Keys, phone, wallet, and wedding rings. Elsa Greene of Michigan had the misfortune of losing her wedding ring – in the sand, no less.

The wife of 17-years was applying sunscreen and temporarily left her rings in her baseball cap.

She always did this when applying sunscreen, so she had little reason to expect to lose them.

It was when a large beetle crawled on her cap that she freaked out. Elsa reactively tossed the cap away in shock, losing the rings in the process.

“There was a big, ugly, nasty beetle crawling on it. It freaked me out, so I threw my hat, and there went my rings.”

Well, her ring was gone now. All because she was so scared of one beetle. I guess some people really are squeamish that way.

Though what mattered now was finding that ring again.

It goes without saying that this was a Herculean task.

In fact, this was a lot worse than finding a needle in a haystack like the old saying goes. We’re finding a small ring on a sandy beach spanning a few hundred square meters.

But wedding rings are nothing to be taken lightly. They’re the very things that tell everyone “I have someone who loves me”. That’s why some folks panic if they so much as get lost in the laundry.

Elsa’s friends noticed a man on the beach with a metal detector. After some explaining, they got him to lend his help with the metal detector. Surely, the help of technology would make the task easier, right?

If only. The metal detector had very little success finding the wedding ring.

Not wanting to give up, her friend Colleen came to the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department for help. Upon hearing what Elsa was dealing with, Sgt. Brad Pelli had to break it to her how little they could do.

It was just the reality of it, or so they thought for a while.

After she left, Sgt. Pelli had a second thought. His partner, a very keen-nosed K9 named Dogo, might help. Dogo has a track record of being able to sniff out stolen property. His nose was well-tuned to the finest of scents. This, Sgt. Pelli thought, might be the ace up their sleeve.

“After Colleen left, I thought about taking my partner with me and giving it a shot.”

A few minutes later, Sgt. Pelli was at the beach with Dogo.

“The officer asked us to pick up our stuff and go back and wait on the pavement because if we’re too close, the dog will smell us and not the rings.” – Green said

Dogo started working his magic. He planted his nose around the spot Elsa’s hat was. Dogo came up to a spot before promptly laying down. They dug at the sand where he stopped, and lo and behold, there was a ring!

That’s one down, one more to go.

Sgt. Pelli let Dogo wait back in the car while he got searching himself. He simply dug around the same spot Dogo rested at, and sure enough, the other ring was there.

What an outstanding job from Dogo! He did what a complex piece of technology couldn’t do, and he definitely deserves a reward.

Not to worry. Sgt. Pelli is going to give him some vanilla ice cream for his hard work.

How about giving Dogo some more recognition? Give this article a share and let more folks see his hard work!
