Police K9 shows a jack-in-the-box who is the boss

While on the job, K9 units are usually all business. They can’t afford distractions and are always looking for ways to serve and protect the communities in which they serve. So, when one K9’s handler presented him with a jack-in-the-box, he was all business and showed the toy – and his partner – who was the real boss.

Ammo, originally from Hungary, has been with the City of Redondo Beach Police Department in California since he was about 18 months old. In that time, the now four-year-old Belgian Malinois/German shepherd mix has become a vital part of his department. Normally, Ammo spends his days tracking down dangerous fugitives or helping his handler, Officer Kyle Lofstrom, protect the streets of the city.

In addition to their regular duties, Officer Lofstrom and K9 Ammo take part in a variety of community outreach programs. This includes demonstrating what it is like to be taken down by a police K9 – all while in protective clothing, of course.

While the pair are usually all business when it comes to their job as a part of the Redondo Beach K9 Team, Officer Lofstrom occasionally likes to take a break from their normal duties. This time, he was wanting to show Ammo something the dog had never seen before: a jack-in-the-box toy.

In a video on Instagram, Lofstrom is shown winding the toy as Ammo watches intently. You can hear the iconic tune that the toy plays as Lofstrom winds toward the climax where the little toy inside, this one shaped like a K9, pops out.

Finally, the toy pops up as expected. Ammo immediately lunges forward and grabs the toy with his mouth, showing Office Lofstrom that he has no time for play and is all business on the job.

So far, the video has over 126,000 views on Instagram. In the moment, it’s hard to tell if Ammo likes the toy or thinks that it is something that needs to be taken down. At least we all know that he knows how to react in a tense situation – but this might also be a sign that Ammo takes his job very seriously!
