Police officer's uniform melts after running inside burning building to save 3-year-old boy

“My baby’s inside!”

A mother screamed just outside Park Apartments in Rogersville, Alabama. Seeing your child in danger and being powerless to do anything about it might be one of the most painful things a parent can go through.

Luckily, there are people all around us that care more about another person than themselves. People like these can sometimes become the deciding factor between life and death.

Officer Tyler Dison received a call about a burning building not far from his route.

He was out on patrol that morning when a call came in the station. He was actually on the last minutes of his shift. Then, just fifteen minutes before 5 in the morning, Park Apartments was on fire.

Officer Dison then drove to the area to see if he can offer any assistance. He got there around 3 minutes before the first firetrucks in the scene. At that point, he might be the only law enforcement officer in the immediate vicinity.

Then, he heard a mother scream.

She was screaming that her child was still inside the building. According to WAAY31, the fire in the structure was roaring so much so that it seemed like the only thing left is the framing.

Seeing the condition of the building, Officer Dison had to make a quick call. Rush into the flames and put his life in danger just to save a boy that he doesn’t know is still alive or just stay put until firefighters arrive?

It only took him around 30 seconds to decide.

“I got to save this child at all costs,” said Officer Dison to WAAY31. Without much thought about his own safety, Officer Dison did what he thought other people would in that situation.

Without any protective gear, he launched himself into the building. Flames were shooting out of the windows and heavy stacks of smoked were rolling from whichever vent was available.

It was way difficult when he reached the upper floors because the rising thick smoke was choking the hallways.

After a few minutes, the police officer came out of the building.

In his arms was a three-year-old boy. Officer Dison said that the toddler was barely conscious when he rescued the boy.

“His breathing was very shallow, he was very lethargic. He was groaning, he wasn’t really responding.” He said to the news outlet, “if I hadn’t done something, that baby would surely have died,”

The little boy sustained minor injuries but has since recovered from the ordeal. Officer Dison suffered injuries too including his burnt arm when his uniform literally melted from the heat.

Things would’ve ended up very differently if it wasn’t for his efforts.

He said that while firefighters were on their way, he couldn’t just stand there and do nothing.

The fire was declared under control within 10 minutes. The boy’s father was later arrested for seven counts of arson.
