Officer comes across tiny owl in road and strikes up cutest ‘conversation’

If you’ve ever been to northern North America and if you enjoy observing birds, you might have come across a Northern Saw-Whet owl, a kind of owl native to that area.

But this kind of owl does not only reside there; Northern Saw-Whet owls can be found throughout North America, while they move south in winter, looking for warmer temperatures.

They are cute creatures that spend most of their day on trees, just above eye level, and prey at night.

They usually go for small rodents, like mice, voles, and moles.

A few years ago, deputies with the Boulder County’s Sheriff’s Office met a baby owl as they were driving down a dirt road on a sunny day.

They pulled over once they noticed a small animal was in the middle of the street, and stepped out of the car in order to help it.

The small birdie has a ball-like shape, with a round head and a tiny body.

It was mostly dark brown, but it had a white face and a creamy yellow chest and belly. Just like any Northern Saw-Whet owl would.

And this is how the officers knew it was this type of owl.

They gently approached it and tried to interact with it.

A female officer tried to talk to the birdie.

“Hi! What’s up?” she said to the baby owl.

The bird kept looking at her and moving its head up and down, trying to figure out what was going on.

The encounter with the tiny bird was captured on video. The video itself is very short, but it gives us an idea of how their adorable interaction went.

After they were done with greetings, they stopped filming, and the officers made sure to encourage the bird to fly away in order to ensure it would not run the risk of being run over by some vehicle.

“Our deputies were driving when they were stopped in their tracks by this young Northern Saw Whet Owl. After some curious head twisting (on both sides) it flew safely away,” the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office shared in a Facebook post.

The video of the officer talking to the baby owl was also posted on YouTube and it soon went viral with almost 8 million views!

People loved how the woman took some time to talk to the bird, and others found it really cute and funny.

“[T]hat was soooo sweet of this officer (sound like a female officer) to video this baby owl, I’m almost out of my eighties and I have never seen a live baby owl,” someone wrote.

Others tried to figure out why the owl was there- maybe protesting? Or maybe the officers stopped her for “drinking and flying”?

Jokes aside, it was clearly a sweet moment between the two, and we just can’t stop looking at this cute baby.
