Ever needed a nap at the worst possible moment? We’ve all been there, and apparently, even animals can have the same problem!

One adorable little police dog named Brody was getting ready for his special swearing-in ceremony when he fell fast asleep and dozed through the whole thing!

Fortunately, his fellow officers got a good laugh out of the whole thing, and so did thousands of other people around the world when the video went viral.

This is Brody. He’s a 3-month-old Chocolate Labrador Retriever, kindly donated to the Bristol, Rhode Island Police Department by the good folks over at Boonefield Labradors.

Brody was selected to become the department’s new therapy dog by Officer Keith Medeiros. Medeiros is a school resource officer who works at the various schools all over Bristol.

When his Chief of Police, Kevin Lynch, suggested that the department open up a new K9 unit, Officer Medeiros set to work researching the possible options.

At first, Officer Medeiros investigated patrol dogs, bomb-detecting dogs, and drug-sniffing dogs too, before starting to look into the idea of comfort or therapy dogs.

Used more and more frequently by many police departments around the world, therapy dogs can be taken to veteran homes, schools, community events, and other places to provide comfort and support for those who need it.

Officer Medeiros decided that a therapy dog is exactly what his department needed, planning big things for the pup. He contacted Boonefield Labradors, local breeders who supply dogs for police forces around New England and met up with his new best buddy: Brody.

Brody was named by combining the B from Bristol and the ‘Rhody’ nickname for the state of Rhode Island. He still has plenty of training ahead of him before becoming a fully-fledged police dog, but the department decided to hold a special swearing-in ceremony in order to welcome him into the force.

They live-streamed the whole thing online, with Officer Medeiros writing a special speech for the big occasion and preparing a Q&A session for folks following at home too.

Unfortunately, Brody just wasn’t quite feeling like his usual energetic self on that particular morning. He fell asleep at the start of the ceremony and carried on napping right the way to the end!

The expressions on the officers’ faces as they started up the live stream with sleepy Brody sprawled out over the desk were simply hilarious!

Thousands of people tuned in to watch the show live, laughing along as the tired little pup got more than 40 winks while his officer buddies introduced him and answered questions from the viewers.

Even when Officer Medeiros picked him up in his arms and showed him off to the camera, Brody could barely open his little eyes and carried on snoozing.

Well, let’s hope Brody enjoyed his nap because he’s got lots of hard work ahead!

His official training will begin in the next few weeks. The COVID-19 outbreak will make things a little difficult at first, but Officer Medeiros plans to take Brody around to various schools and introduce him to different people, while observing the rules of social distancing, in order to train him up.

If Brody passes his tests in about a year’s time, he’ll be an official therapy dog, ready to help countless people in the community, and we wish him a lot of luck!
