Struggling mom with $7 to her name donates lottery winnings to cop shot so cops come looking for her
Single mother Shetara Sims has been through a lot in her life, with the most heartbreaking part being her daughter’s murder in 2012.
When her beloved daughter was murdered, the only people Shetara could turn to were police officers, who supported her and helped her through that hard time.
“She said the detectives who worked her daughter’s case were like her therapists, fathers, and lifelines all in one,” Kansas City Police Department officers wrote in a GoFundMe page they created for her a couple of years ago.
The woman was so grateful for the cops’ support that she didn’t have to think twice when she won the lottery two years ago.
At the time, she had just lost her job and she was struggling with bills. She could hardly make ends meet, and, as it was reported at the time, she only had $7 in her name at the time.
But then, something special happened. As she was grocery shopping with her 12-year-old daughter, Rakiya, they found a 1-dollar bill on the floor of the parking lot.
She decided to buy a lottery ticket with it. And when she saw that the ticket won $100, she knew exactly where she was going to spend it.
“Mom, we should give that to the police officer who got shot,” Rakiya said, referring to an officer who had been shot in the line of duty about a week earlier.
Shetara knew this was the right thing to do. After all, it would be a way to give back to the police who treated her and her other daughter like family when she lost her little girl.
So, she called the KCMPD and asked to make a donation.
The officer who took her call replied that the shot officer, who was then in the ICU, was taken care of, but she could make a donation to help his family with gas and restaurant expenses when they were driving to and back from the hospital.
Shetara did donate the money, and, when the police department posted the story on social media, there were hundreds of people who wanted to help the single mom out.
After doing some research- since Sims had not left a name when she made the donation- the officers tracked her down and met up with her and her 12-year-old daughter.
Even when the officers let her know that they would create a GoFundMe page for her, she asked if the shot officer’s family needed the money more than she did.
The page was eventually created and, although the initial goal was $10,000, people have since donated almost $170k.
It truly is unbelievable how this woman’s act of generosity was returned in such a great way.
As for the wounded officer, his fellow KCPD officers explained that he soon got better, was discharged from the hospital, and was in intensive brain injury rehabilitation.
What a beautiful story that reminds us that when you treat others with kindness, life returns the good to you one way or the other.
