Poor mom donates lottery winnings to cop in ICU – then other cops start tracking her down
Life has been anything but easy and calm for Shetara Sims, a single mother who lives in Kansan City, Missouri. The woman is financially struggling and actually only has seven dollars on her bank account, but would give whatever she had to help those in need. Her generous act of kindness has actually touched the hearts of many around the world.
Back in 2012, Shetaraâs entire world fell apart. One of her two daughters was actually killed, leaving her life with a huge void and pain.
Aside from the emotional struggles, the single mother also had to do everything she could just to stay afloat and make ends meet. Life definitely hasnât been easy for her and her daughter, but she did everything she could to give her a happy life.
Recently, due to the coronavirus pandemic, Shetaraâs financial situation worsened even more. She was laid off from her job and is now barely able to pay the bills.
Just a couple of days ago, Shetera went to the grocery store and actually found a dollar bill laying on the floor.
Itâs a very small amount, of course, but she took it as a sign and wanted to take a leap of faith.
With the one dollar in hand, she bought a lottery ticket â and it seems like it was a sign indeed!
Shetara had a winning lottery ticket worth a hundred dollars. Hundred dollars that wouldâve definitely helped her financial situation, but she didnât actually cash out the ticket herself.
Her little girl Rakiya was there when she discovered that she actually had a winning ticket, and she immediately had a wonderful and heartfelt idea.
âMom, we should give that to the police officer who got shot,â Rakiya told her.
The little girl was actually talking about something that happened in the area when a police officer from the Kansas City Missouri Department was shot in the line of duty.
The injury was quite severe, and he was still in the ICU days after he was shot. Things werenât looking great, and Shetara and her daughter figured that he and his family could use the money more.
For Shetara, she also sees it as a way to give back to the police family.
After her daughter died in 2012, a lot of police officers and detectives offered her a lot of support and counsel, which is something sheâll always remember. Of course, such an immense loss is absolutely tragic to deal with and she didnât have the will to live anymore. The officers helped her process things and were also there for her when she needed it.
She gave the police department an anonymous phone call and left instructions to cash out the $100 lottery winnings.
The police officers were really moved by such a kind gesture, especially because Shetera said on the phone that she wasnât in a financially good place herself.
Because she made the donation anonymously, some of the officers actually made an effort to try and track the mystery donor, just so they could thank her in person.
It actually was a pretty tough search that took a few days, but they managed to find the generous woman after all.
Right away, some of the officers decided to bring her and her daughter a visit. Some of the co-workers who were also at the scene of the shooting were present to give both of these kindhearted people a well-deserved thank you.
And it certainly didnât end there â the story about Shetera absolutely blew up on the police departmentâs social media page and managed to warm a lot of hearts on the internet.
After all the attention they received, the KCDP actually wanted to do something more for Shetera and her daughter, so they started a GoFundMe-page for the family to help out with their financial struggles.

âSheâs got a heart of gold,â their Facebook page says.
The original target for the GoFundMe page was actually $10,000, but so many people made a donation to help out Shetara and Rakiya and managed to acquire more than $57,000!
Even when this woman just had seven dollars to her name, she still decided to give away what she had to a family in need. Itâs a pure, kind, warm, and selfless act â and itâs only fair that other people are able to help her out now too.
Itâs crazy how one generous act can have such an impact on your life!
