High school can be tough for people that don’t fit in. Denis Estimon is doing all that he can to make other kids feel included.
Most people know what’s it’s like to not fit in. Denis Estimon was once one of those people.
When Estimon was a little kid, he moved to America from Haiti. Sadly, he struggled to integrate with the other kids in his class. During lunchtimes, he would sit alone.
But as the years passed, things started to change. Estimon became more used to life in America, and he became more confident.
Eventually, he found his crowd and became a popular kid.
Yet those difficult years were often on his mind. At lunch, he saw other kids who sat alone, like he himself once did.
Some would have ignored those unpopular kids. But Estimon wanted to do something to help them.
“To me, it’s like if you don’t try to make that change, who’s gonna do it?” – Denis Estimon.
That’s when he had a bright idea. Estimon made a school club that he named, We Dine Together.
Estimon’s club had a simple yet effective mission. The members of the club would look out for lonely kids at lunch and hang out with them.
And that club soon became successful. Every day, kids ended up making friends with one another. Kids, who under normal circumstances would never have met, discovered that they had so much in common.
But Estimon wasn’t content with ending loneliness at his own school.
He wanted to bring this program to other schools and open chapters across America and even across the world.
Word of Estimon’s club turned organization soon started spreading. Then a news team made a report on it, which went viral on YouTube.
To date, the report has gained over 2.5 million views. It also has more than 46,000 likes and 3,800 comments. People have been saying things like this:
And since this news report came out, We Dine Together went from strength to strength.
Estimon successfully extended the program to a range of other schools.
Later, the anti-bullying organization Be Strong took an interest in We Dine Together and soon integrated it into its activities.
Just think, Estimon is making the prospects of school students all over the USA better. Who knows how many kids will grow up to have happy and successful lives thanks to him?
It’s important to consider stories like Estimon’s when you hear so much negativity toward immigration in the news. In recent years, immigrants to America have been blamed for a lot of the country’s problems. But people like Estimon show how and why immigrants are a force for good.
Estimon arrived from Haiti, and he used his experiences to enhance the lives of others. That’s not an unusual thing for an immigrant to do. And it shows why we shouldn’t fear the country changing because of immigrants. Yes, immigration has changed and will change America, for the better.
