Street photographer tracks down people he photographed decades ago to retake photos

Chris Porsz calls himself an amateur photographer, but with multiple books under his belt, it’s safe to say he’s made it.

Nearly 40 years ago he began taking photos on the streets of his hometown of Peterborough, England. Later, he got the idea to try and recreate them and set about trying to find the subjects.

In his book Reunions, he was able to replicate a stunning 134 photographs!

Check out a sampling of 15 of his works of art below:

1. 1985 and 2015

In a Facebook post, Porsz said of Michael Ross (aka “Nobby”):

“Fortunately I took a few snaps around town in the eighties and nineties and it was good to see him looking much better in 2015 when we spoke in his Dogsthorpe flat. I showed him his 1980 image from my book New England and he said it was not him, but with a wry smile. I mentioned he did look a bit different without his beard and long hair.”

2. A 30-year difference

Porsz managed to track down both the kid and the constable from this photo.

They can’t recall what they were talking about when it was first taken.

3. Layla

While she’s lactose intolerant now, Layla sure enjoyed her milk back in 1983.

Now she’s raising two children in Peterborough, England.

4. That’s bananas

Imagine being able to track down a random woman buying bananas 40 years later!

Unbelievable!

5. From pasta to ice cream

The first photo was taken in 1980 when Genesio Borrillo moved to Peterborough from Italy and bought an ice cream truck.

When the photo was retaken in 2014, he has set up his own pasta shop in the city.

6. Reunited (1979 & 2016)

Sandra Williams, Carmen Chin, and Maureen Mayers were friends from County Grammar School back in the 70s.

They lost touch over the years but were happy to see one another again nearly 40 years later.

7. Married with children

From 5 boys running to 5 dads reunited, sometimes it feels like not much has changed.

After Porsz brought these men back together, they began planning a school reunion.

8. Still friends

These 4 men have been friends all along.

Not much has changed but the amount of hair they have.

9. Trudy and Dave

Still married but with a new dog, Trudy and Dave were tracked down in the most unbelievable fashion.

Porsz said on Facebook:

“…I had no contact details but found Trudie by selling her a calendar with her image on the June page ( her birthday).”

10. Once upon a time on a Saturday

Martin Coulson and Andy Randall recalled it being a Saturday when they allowed Porsz to take a photo of them eating chips after a trip to the arcade.

They were hitting up the toy store next, which they no doubt did later with their own kids.

11. Still punk after all these years

Some things never change – like Badger Farcue’s hair!

At the time of the first photo, he was participating in (and winning!) a pizza-eating contest.

“My friends encouraged me to enter and we had to try and eat a 12-inch pizza as quickly as possible. I won and got a round of applause and front page of the local paper,” he told Porsz.

12. Sisters

Shehnaz, Rukhsana, and Itrat Begum loved to sit in the window of their Cromwell Road home.

Shehnaz told Porsz:

“My twin sister and I were about seven and Itrat was nine. We loved riding our bikes with the other children in the street and were good friends with another set of twins. Mum said we were quite a handful.”

13. Pair of punks

Tina Tarr and “Dog” are no longer together but they do share two children (twins!).

Tina told Porsz:

“I remember the photo being taken, it was a brilliant time. I had various styles of punk hair for quite a few years.”

Dog added: “They were good times, I still had hair then.”

14. Unaware

Tony and Sally had no idea their photo was being taken in 1980.

Porsz only managed to get back in touch with them after Tony’s father saw their photo in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph when Porsz was looking to get back in touch with some of his subjects for the book.

The two are married now and have two children in their twenties.

15. A window to the past

While she no longer works at a jewelry store, Vicki Gracey was happy to go back to recreate this photo.

We’re glad she did because this set of photos is incredible.
