Stephen Garofalo had been delivering mail to the same New Jersey community for many years. When he noticed something unusual one day, he knew he had to act fast.

Garofalo considers himself to be an important part of the community that he delivers mail to. Everyone knows him by name. But recently, he became a hero of the neighborhood.

One morning, he was delivering the mail when he saw something strange. A two-year-old was outside of his home, looking distressed. The child recognized Garofalo, so he looked at him for help.

Garofalo asked the child why he was outside alone and where his mom was.

The child then pointed to his home. Garofalo called into the home, concerned. When he received no answer, he walked inside, growing ever more worried.

The child’s mother, Stephanie Wilson, was lying on the ground, unconscious. Garofalo dialled 911 and urged the first responders to arrive as soon as possible.

Garofalo checked the woman’s vital signs and put her in the recovery position. Once he had done all that he could for the mother, Garofalo turned to the child and reassured him that everything was going to be all right.

The first responders arrived. They were able to revive the mother. They soon discovered that the mother had had an adverse reaction to her new medication.

Luckily, after a short while, the responders were able to ensure that the mother would not fall unconscious again.

Soon, word started spreading about how Garofalo had saved Wilson. People began congratulating him as he went about his job. But Garofalo himself was modest, believing that many others would have acted as he acted.

“My mom used to say, ‘If you see someone in trouble, you help.’ And that’s basically what it is.” – Stephen Garofalo.

Wilson had always thought of Garofalo as a kind person. But since the incident, she considers him to be nothing less than a saint.

The US Postal Service has even rewarded Garofalo with a rare honor. They presented him with the Life-Saving Award in recognition of what he did on that day.

Since this event, the residents of this New Jersey community feel a lot safer, knowing that Garofalo is there to look out for them.

Of course, in the last few months, people have really started to value postal workers. With most of us stuck at home, we have become ever more reliant on postal services to keep us connected to the things we want and need. In their own ways, everyone who works in the post office is a hero.

People like Garofalo have been going from door to door, risking their health, for our sakes. That really is an incredible thing.

All mail workers deserve the same respect that Garofalo has gotten! However, the median mailman hourly salary is just $18.07. Clearly, they should be earning a lot more for what they are doing! Hopefully, when coronavirus recedes and the world gets back on track, mailmen all across the USA will receive a much-deserved pay rise.
