Pour Sprite in a pot with some chicken for a delicious twist on traditional chicken
There are many ways to prepare chicken, including frying, grilling, and baking it. In many cases, what you add to your chicken can affect the taste just as much. And while there are some peculiar ingredients that you can add to your chicken dish, one of the most random might be Sprite.
Step 1: Prepare the ingredients
Thatβs right, the popular soft drink manufactured by the makers of Coca-Cola. The lime flavor of the Sprite is said to give any chicken dish it is added to a delicious flavor. A video of the recipe has been viewed over 10 million times and goes to show the popularity of the combination.
For this recipe, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 whole red onion (cut into bite-sized pieces)
- 6 cloves of garlic (diced)
- 1 whole chicken (2 to 3 pounds)
- Salt and pepper
- 1 teaspoon lemongrass (crushed)
- 1 packet of prepared oyster sauce
- 1 cup soy sauce
- 1 scallion (finely diced)
- Olive oil
Once you have all of your ingredients together, you need to prepare them. You can do this by chopping the red onion into bite-sized pieces and dicing the garlic. Set them aside for later.
Step 2: Rinse and dry the chicken
To get the chicken ready, rinse it thoroughly before patting it dry. Place the chicken on a clean cutting board and cut it open to access the inside cavity. Sprinkle a quarter teaspoon of pepper and one teaspoon of salt inside of the cavity.
Step 3: Prepare the chicken
Next, add the chopped red onion and diced garlic to the cavity. Close the skin flap. This is to keep the ingredients inside of the cavity from coming out while you are cooking the chicken.
Placing the chicken on a plate, rub a small amount of olive oil on one side. Sprinkle on a quarter teaspoon of lemongrass and then turn over and repeat this process on the other side.
Step 4: Place the chicken in a Dutch oven
Before placing the prepared chicken inside of a Dutch oven place two forks and two spoons in the bottom of the dish in a crisscross pattern. This is to keep the chicken from scorching while it cooks.
Step 5: Add the Sprite
Once the chicken is on top of the forks and spoons inside of the Dutch oven, add 1 liter of Sprite. Pour the drink over the top of the chicken as you pour it in. Next, add one packet of prepared oyster sauce of your choosing.
Step 6: Boil the chicken
Cover the dish and bring the ingredients inside of the Dutch oven to a boil. Remove the lid and pour in 1 cup of soy sauce. Cover the pot again and reduce the heat. Continue to cook the dish in this manner for an hour. You may need to cook it for a little longer if you have a larger chicken.
Step 7: Remove from the Dutch oven
Once the chicken has thoroughly cooked remove it from the Dutch oven. To make sure a chicken is done enough, use a meat thermometer to measure the internal temperature of the meat. Which should be 165 degrees or higher.
Step 8: Add chopped scallions and serve
Place the cooked chicken onto a serving dish and sprinkle on some finely chopped scallions. Your dish is now ready to serve.
