Pregnant dog refuses to give birth at the shelter — waits until she finds the perfect place
There are dog lovers in this world, and then there are people like Chris and Mariesa. The couple rescue dogs from their home, but when they decided to adopt a pregnant shelter dog named Storie, they knew even they might be getting in over their heads.
A dog refuses to have her puppies
Storie, a pit bull who was at the Cuyahoga County Kennel in Ohio, had so far refused to give birth. Maybe it was because she was in a stressful situation, which can cause a dog to refuse to deliver their pups. And while Chris and Mariesa had no idea how many puppies Storie was pregnant with, the couple could tell by looking at her that there were a lot.
At one time, Storie had belonged to a breeder, but once the breeder realized she was pregnant with so many puppies, they surrendered her to the shelter.
Bonding with Storie immediately, Chris and Mariesa were determined to help her as much as they could, mainly by giving her a safe place where she felt comfortable enough to birth her litter.
“I’m trying to think, ‘Is this going to work? Is there any way we can make this work?’ Chris said in a video interview. Meanwhile, Mariesa was just like, ‘Let’s save the dog; that’s why we’re here.’”
So many puppies
Taking Storie to the vet after they took her in, the couple was shocked when they saw the ultrasound. Not only was Storie pregnant, she had 12 puppies just waiting to be born. So, the couple took Storie to their home to prepare for her birth, hopefully in a few days.
Storie had different plans, though.
Storie had her puppies relatively fast
Chris and Mariesa made Storie a place in the back of their home where she could have her pups. No sooner had she settled in that night when Storie went into labor. Within 18 hours, Storie had delivered all 12 of her puppies.
The addition of Storie and her puppies added to the couple’s already sizeable dog family. Having seven dogs already, many of them seniors, the couple knew that there was no way they could keep Storie and her brood.
While they waited to find a home for Storie and her pups, they would take good care of them.
Finding Storie and her litter new homes
Within two weeks, the puppies’ eyes started to open. Once they were old enough, Chris and Mariesa faced the daunting task of getting them adopted. For their part, the couple handled the whole thing like pros. Along with the help of Pibbles and More Animal Rescue, the couple was able to find new homes for Storie and her puppies.
