Pregnant mom puts her and baby's life at risk to save 3 young girls from drowning

When we think of pregnant mothers, “super-swimming heroes” probably isn’t the phrase that comes to mind! Pregnancy can be really tough and physical activity becomes more difficult as you start to pop (enter: husband who has to tie his wife’s shoes for three months).

For one mom living in Michigan, a beach day was about to turn into something much more dangerous.

Alyssa DeWitt was with her family at the First Street Beach in Manistee, Michigan. The beach is on one of the Great Lakes and is a popular day-trip stop on Lake Michigan. Alyssa was there with her three kids back in May and was enjoying some sun after the winter weather was finally lifting.

Alyssa wasn’t just there with her three daughters, she was pregnant to boot!

Going to the beach with kids is a hassle all by itself. They are constantly running out of your line of sight, you can’t keep an eye on them all the time, and they just make a mess of things in the sand. Alyssa, however, was also pregnant! On top of the three girls she brought, she was also “carrying” another one around in her belly!

She almost canceled the trip that day on account of the weather.

It was incredibly windy on that May day and the idea of the sand whipping around wasn’t that appealing. On the heels of the cold weather, however, Alyssa still decided to brave it and go out for a much-needed day in the sun.

When they got there, they set up their stuff on the right side of the beach where the pier was.

Normally, the family would head over to the left and it was part of their routine to do so. This day was different and that one small change in their typical routine would have a profound impact on what would come next.

“I’ve always taken them to the left, so I’m not sure why I chose that side that day. And I don’t really think it was a coincidence that I did,” she said.

As she sat and watched, the waves coming in from the wind were massive.

With the wind whistling by, she saw something happen right before her eyes. Three young girls got into the water and slowly went out into deeper water. As she watched, things turned dire. They lost balance and all Alyssa could see were flailing arms and water.

Running to the shore, she pulled her three kids out and told them to stay put.

Calling 911 as she ran, the operator could barely hear her as she shouted in the wind. There wasn’t anyone else on her side of the beach to potentially help, either. Alyssa was going to have to make a dangerous decisoin.

“When I got to the edge where they were, they could barely keep their heads above the water at that point. So I knew right away if I don’t do something these kids are going to drown,” she recalled.

Alyssa bent down over the pier and held onto the girls.

It was down to the wire. The girls were convinced they were going to die, even voicing it aloud! Alyssa was reassuring them she would never let go. Finally, in a moment of insane strength, Alyssa hauled them over the edge and back to safety.

The moment was done and everyone was safe if not a bit shaken up.

You never know your own strength until you need to use it!
