Preemie who had to be kept alive in a sandwich bag defies all odds and is off to school now

It’s a special day for any parent when their child starts school, but for Gill Glegg, it must feel like a miracle.

Gill wasn’t given much hope of her child surviving when she gave birth via emergency c-section 3 months early. Now her daughter, Darcey, is about to start school.

It was a bit of a shock when Gill and her partner Mark found out they were expecting.

Gill was 45 years old at the time and the couple had 3 other children ages 30, 20, and 18.

The couple likely thought that with their third child turning 18, that their days of changing diapers, waking up at all hours, and caring for an infant were over. That wasn’t what was in the cards for them, however. It was a surprise, but a happy one. A fourth child would be a blessing for their family.

“It was a bit of a shock but a lovely one,” said Gill.

Unfortunately, the couple would get some scary news after a routine scan.

At 28 weeks into her pregnancy, a scan revealed the baby was not receiving enough blood.

There were also abnormalities with the placenta. Gill was rushed into emergency surgery in an attempt to save the child.

“I wasn’t given much hope that she would make it. But she came out crying,” Gill would later say.

Darcey was only 1lb and 5oz.

Doctors wrapped her in a sandwich bag to keep the little child warm. She looked so tiny and vulnerable; it must have been heartbreaking for the family to sit with the uncertainty of not knowing what would happen to her.

Being born so tiny at 3 months early, there was worry the child would not make it.

After 64 days of care, Darcey was healthy enough to go home with her family.

“Darcey is amazing,” said Gill.

“She was so tiny in that little sandwich bag, I didn’t know if she would make it. But now she has defied the odds and she is perfectly healthy. It’s so emotional to see her start school.”

Darcey is starting kindergarten now, and it is an emotional time for the family.

To go from an infant tiny enough to fit into a bag designed for sandwiches to being ready for her first day at primary school.

“She is a dream,” Gill said. “I still remember looking at her tiny body in an incubator.”

“She defied the odds.”

Darcey is super excited for her first day at school.

“I’m really excited to start school,” Darcy said.

“I can’t wait to go and play with lots of other kids.”
