Preteens in dance competition show off smooth dance moves that win them first place
The shag is a dance led by a male dancer, usually accompanied by beach music. Today, it is a recognized dance in national and international dance competitions held across the United States.
Do you want to see how two teenagers enjoy the dance style that originated in South Carolina during the 1940s?
Stay with us because Farrior and West are golden dancers.
Despite looking deceptively easy, the shag is actually quite challenging and it takes a lot of time to practice all the moves.
The most familiar reference to the shag is the 1989 film Shag that featured the Carolina shag, a specific subset of the dance. Some other related dance styles are lindy hop, swing, and collegiate shag.
However, Carolina shag has little to no resemblance to other dance styles, and it is much more complicated to perfect than it might seem. It’s a male-led step and it allows as much improvisation and imagination as desired.
National Shag Dance Championship, or NSDC, is the annual competition that takes place in Myrtle Beach.
NSDC is a three-day event divided into six categories: Junior I, Junior II, Non-Pro, Pro, Senior, and Masters.
The 2021 event was canceled, but organizers are optimistic that it will take place in January 2022. For more information, visit the official website.
Brooke Farrior and Billy West heated the atmosphere in 2020 during the Junior I Division.
Both children are from North Carolina. They’re in the 7th grade, and you can spot huge smiles on their faces as soon as they step on stage.
The young dancers are wearing elegant clothes, and they calmly stand under the spotlight as they are being announced. It is not until they begin to dance that we see the real surprise of the show.
The kids are impressive dancers.
The chemistry between the two is unmatched.
As entertaining as it is to watch a skilled dance couple on the act, we must say that we were pleasantly surprised by Brooke and Billy. They are focused, precise, and the rhythm is contagious.
One YouTube user commented that Billy “has got rubber legs.” Judging by the way the boy moves, we must agree: his flexibility is incredible.
Billy is a true gentleman, and he doesn’t want to cast a shadow over Brooke.
Interestingly, Billy is the one who’s been dancing since he was three years old, and he’s got a lot more practice.
Brooke is a novice, but she manages to follow Billy’s tempo correctly.
The best part about their dance is that the duo complements each other, and they are always trying to emphasize each other’s qualities. Since we are talking about teamwork, bravo, you two!
Both teenagers have a lot of tricks up their sleeves!
They genuinely project some great swag.
As predictable as it might sound, Billy has saved the best part for the end of their choreography.
He squats while Brooke is holding his hands, then jumps with his feet twisted to one side.
You have got to see it to believe it.
The judges were dazzled, that’s for sure.
Look at their faces, they’re not even blinking. We assume that hours and hours of practice are behind that move. Impressive.
The audience is cheering the duo on the whole time, and everyone seems to be having a blast.
We love when children surprise us with their hidden talents.
Brooke and Billy have indeed surprised everyone. A well-deserved first place. Congratulations!
