Prince Harry and Meghan Markle adopt rescue beagle from puppy mill

Did you really think that “happily ever after” is only applicable to humans?

Just recently, over 4,000 beagles were rescued at a facility in Virginia. The US Department of Justice sued Envigo RMS LLC, which ran the puppy mill.

The facility is breeding beagles and sells them to laboratories for drug experiments. It was a hellish experience for the puppies, especially when they found out that the dogs were being killed even for easily treated conditions.

The conditions were so bad – nursing beagles were denied food, and even if there was any, it contained maggots, feces, or molds. In an eight-week period, the facility lost 25 beagle puppies because they couldn’t keep them warm.

After the rescue, several humane organizations and shelters faced a mammoth task.

They rescued 4,000 beagles in one go, and now they have to rehome all of them. The US Humane Society began coordinating with partners all over the country.

With their efforts, they’ve connected even as far as California, where they connected to someone they didn’t expect.

Shannon Keith from the Beagle Freedom Project narrated her brush with royalty.

Keith shared with 7News that she got an email about a scheduled phone call with a “supporter.” When she got to the phone call, the woman on the other end introduced herself as “Meghan.”

Meghan was looking to pitch in with the beagle rescue and wanted to adopt one of them. At first, she thought it was another celebrity, Megan Fox. But when they visited the facility, Keith finally saw who she was.

The Duchess of Sussex visited their facility.

The couple visited the 25 dogs under the facility’s care. Among them were a 7-year-old dog and her litter of 7-week-old puppies.

While they were a lot of beagles to choose from, Markle quickly decided to take a mother dog. And just like that, Mamma Mia’s life changed in an instant.

“’We’re adopting her,'” Keith quoted the Duchess of Sussex. “She was like, ‘No, we don’t want a Christmas puppy. … We want ones we can help who are older.'”

A spokesperson for the family confirmed that Markle wanted to get involved in helping the dogs and insisted on adopting an older dog as puppies are easier to rehome.

Mamma Mia isn’t the first dog that the couple rescued.

Gus is also a beagle Markle rescued. Meanwhile, Pula was adopted by the couple. Keith also shared that Harry was already “attuned” to Mamma Mia’s needs.

When they prepared to leave the facility, he noticed that Mamma Mia was looking for something. He asked if there was something the dog left, like a favorite toy, perhaps.

From the box of toys, the beagle quickly picked out a stuffed fox which she brought with her all the way from Maryland to California.

The Sussexes have helped various organizations across the globe.

The couple worked with African conservationists to protect the local wildlife. The duke is also leading Travalyst, a non-profit dedicated to transforming tourism into an eco-friendly industry.

Meanwhile, the duchess is focused on organizations promoting women empowerment through education and opportunities.
