High school principal works night job at local Walmart to help his low-income students

Henry Darby is not an ordinary man. He has been the principal of North Charleston High School in South Carolina for countless years, and he is also a longtime county councilman. But some time ago, he took a third job as a Walmart associate.

No, Mr. Darby didn’t want to have some extra income. He just wanted to help his students.

The man, who was already tired working at the school in the morning, started working at Walmart stocking shelves five days a week. He was working 10pm to 7am, but he soon realized that he wasn’t young enough to have such a busy schedule.

So, he reduced the hours he worked at the grocery store, going from five days to three days per week, and it kind of worked.

Mr. Darby’s schedule is still a busy one. Going to school every morning, then relaxing a little and taking maybe a two-hour nap before starting his shift at the store. His shift there finishes right on time to get to the campus before the bell rings.

But the man never complains. In fact, he didn’t even mention that he has a day job when he went to Walmart to ask for a job.

“The work ethic that he has just to come into work after his other two jobs is just really remarkable to us,” Cynthia Solomon, store manager of the Centre Point Drive Walmart, said. “His dedication and coming in and doing the job it requires every night is really very impressive.”

His colleagues admire him because he is such a positive person, and so determined that things will only get better.

Mr. Darby uses all of his paycheck from the store to help his students. He just can’t come to terms with the fact that some of his students live below the poverty line, and he knows that this is the best he can do to help them.

Besides that, he also wants to teach his students a lesson. Some of them wouldn’t even go to Walmart to ask for a job because they believe it’s beneath them, but seeing him do it, he hopes to inspire them.

“If some of them could see that if a principal could work at Walmart, why can’t they?” he said.

What Mr. Darby is doing is not surprising to those who know him well. They know that this is the kind of man he is. This is his lifestyle.

The principal wants to convey a message and teach by example. Born in a poor family, but raised with his mindset on helping others whenever possible, he wishes more people would act just like him.

“I wish that those of us who are born of poverty and we had to struggle and we made it to at least the lower middle class, that we will look back to help others,” he said.

A fundraiser started for the man last year, and donations are now approaching $200,000. The whole amount will be sent to the school’s Booster Club as per Mr. Darby’s request.
