School principal works night job at Walmart to help support his low-income students

Being a principal is a full-time job. It takes your whole day to watch over students, let alone manage the entire school.

Henry Darby, North Charleston High School principal, is definitely a busy man. He is not just an educator, but also a long-time county councilman as well. People might think that his schedule is already packed, but this kind gentleman thinks otherwise.

Henry really wanted to help his struggling students and he thought of a way to earn the funds he needs: by taking on a third job.

His daytime is already full of his principal and councilman duties, so there is no other schedule left than his night time. He decided to accept the night shift job at Walmart so he can earn more and give more to his low-income students.

His work at Walmart is for three nights a week, stocking shelves from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM. His shift is finished with just enough minutes for him to get ready for his job as the principal.

He used to work for five nights a week, but eventually realizing that he is not young anymore, Henry decided to take it easy and cut down his shifts to three nights, beginning September.

Selfless as he is, the principal did not take the third job to increase his own wealth. He did it for the students who are struggling. he could not turn a blind eye to these kids who wanted to go to school but are not as blessed with the support that they need in terms of finances.

Henry is not a rich man himself, but he had a heart overflowing with love and genuine care for his students.

He knew a lot of students were below the poverty line and could not even pay the bills. He used a portion of his earnings to pay for these kids’ tuition and pay for their home bills so they can focus more on studying.

Walmart store manager Cynthia Solomon finds the idea of a principal taking on a grocery worker role a bit unusual, and could not believe that she will be employing such a man in her 16 years in service. The fact that this man is doing the job to help out his students is an even more amazing thing.

Working hard is definitely something familiar and natural to this kind gentleman.

As it turns out, juggling three jobs is not something new to principal Henry. This man also worked three to four jobs since his teenage years. And during his years as an educator, he also works various odd jobs at factories while being a teacher to young adults.

In 2004, Henry was elected to County Council and was reelected in November. In 2017, Henry became North Charleston High School’s principal.

Since he’s started working and donating, principal Henry has donated about $2,500 or half of his total earnings. He plans to donate the rest after paying taxes. The principal tried to keep his Walmart job a secret but one of the students recognized him on his first day.

Elizabeth Bowens, the school’s parent advocate administrator, said they make sure to use up all of the resources available to students and families before letting Henry donate his earnings from his job at Walmart.

“His heart is so big. This is his community. He’s grown up here, he still lives here. These kids are like his kids,” she shared.

Henry hopes to inspire his students to be compassionate:

“It’s quite simple, simplistic: Just learn to help others. That is one of the greatest things that we could do in terms of human beings,” he said.”I am an optimist,” Darby said. “But I’m also a determinist. I know that it’s going to get better. I know that these times will not always be with us. I know that my students will not always be in poverty. I know that because that’s what we are. America makes it better for everybody.”

Walmart was moved by the man’s genuinely kind and generous heart that the company decided to donate $50,000 for the students of North Charleston High School. Darby could not contain his happiness and gratefulness for the amount his school received.
