Couple lights up the floor with silky smooth dance moves, earning them over 2M views
Myers Varn Floyd hung up her pom-poms last year and left the Carolina Panthers cheer squad to move on to bigger and better things, but as far as we know, she hasn’t stopped dancing.
Along with her partner for the 2017 Grand Nationals Pro-Am division Caleb Brown, she’s actually going viral for a shag dance routine that’s now been viewed over 2 million times on YouTube.
It’s unclear whether the two are still competing, but their entry into the Nationals continues to make its way around the Internet, partly due to renewed interest in swing dance in general, which includes a variety of subgenres such as shag, the Lindy Hop, and other blasts from the past like boogie-woogie.
And while all of these dances might seem like relics from a former decade, there are many dancers – both old and young – that are keeping these traditions alive, even after they faded from the mainstream.
After watching Floyd and Brown dance, you’ll see why it’s become such a popular genre of video to watch as well!
As the couple walks out onto the floor – not in glitzy costumes but rather neutral colors – the song “Oh What A Thrill” from the band Rockpile’s Seconds of Pleasure album begins to play.
As Floyd takes a spin, they look into each other’s eyes and break out into some rubbed-legged and fast-footed moves. Unfortunately, it’s a little tough to see some of Floyd’s skills because her billowy pink pants obscure her legs a bit.
But not everyone agreed:
The two are joined hand-in-hand throughout most of the performance as Brown suddenly gets flexible on us!
While none of the choreography is too intense it does require some great synchronization between the pair as they execute spins, twists, and slides.
It’s a unique routine in that both dancers share just as many moments in the spotlight. Normally it feels like the male dancer is in the background while all eyes are on the women, but Brown gets multiple times to shine – and it’s a good thing too because he’s got some great moves!
Both dancers seem pretty mellow throughout but in the Pro-Am division, typically one performer is an amateur.
As the dancers glide around the floor, it’s clear they’ve spent plenty of time rehearsing this performance. One commenter identified the specific style of shag dancing as the New Orleans slide or Carolina shag, but there’s no other information readily available that would confirm or contradict that.
A little over 2 minutes in, the dancers really display some personality as the two make more eye contact and show off a few tricks they have up their sleeves.
And, for the most part, commenters loved watching:
“LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this! Fantastic couple! Such totally smooth moves, making something that had to take hours of practice look easy. Bravo! Terrific talent.”
While there are more videos of Floyd’s performances we don’t know much else about Brown, but it’s clear he has enough talent to keep competing! We sure hope they’re both still dancing.
