Waffles the mini-horse and Hemingway the goose became best friends when they were neglected in an outdoor paddock. The rescuers realized they needed to stay together.

Conditions were tough in the paddock. Their owner rarely cleaned it or fed Hemingway or Waffles.

So the two had to work together to get all the nutrition they needed. This made them form an incredibly strong bond.

The rescuers arrived one day and took the animals to the shelter.

As they were loading the animals onto their truck, they noticed that the two animals wanted to be as close as possible.

Then at the shelter, Hemingway was desperate to be put in the same stable as Waffles.

Whenever a shelter volunteer went into the stable, they experienced first hand just how protective Hemingway was of Waffles. He wouldn’t let anyone get too close to the miniature horse and would peck away at what he thought were intruders.

Then the shelter posted the duo onto Facebook. The post explained that Hemingway and Waffles were best friends and needed to be together.

A kind-hearted, horse-owning couple, Maddie and Nick, saw the post and realized that they could give Hemingway and Waffles the lives they deserved.

“When I heard that Waffles and Hemingway were up for adoption, I was like, ‘I have to put in an application.'” – Maddie.

When the couple met Waffles and Hemingway, they were convinced that the best friends were perfect for their home. They already had a normal-sized horse, Peabody, who had a similarly feisty personality. So they knew what they were dealing with there! Owning a goose would be a new experience, but if they could look after a horse, they knew they could handle Hemingway.

Then Hemingway and Waffles arrived at Maddie and Nick’s home.

They had no idea yet that this would become their permanent home. But Waffles was already happy to be there nonetheless. He even started neighing with happiness as soon as he got out of the truck.

When Hemingway and Waffles were safely in their new stable, Maddie decided to introduce Peabody to them.

So she walked the horse down to the stable to peer in through the bars. He was interested to see the tiny horse, but Hemingway’s protectiveness scared him.

Later on on that first day, Maddie introduced Waffles and Hemingway to their field and pool. Both of the animals were amazed to have so much space to play in.

Over the next few weeks, Waffles and Hemingway fit in with all the other animals on the farm. Hemingway even became good friends with Peabody. The goose’s protective tendencies extended to the large horse.

Waffles is doing so well that Maddie has begun training him as a therapy horse.
