Wearing the police uniform comes with the responsibility to serve and protect the public.

But that doesn’t mean a police officer is limited to ensuring public safety. In some unexpected moments, their duty also extends to saving stray animals – particularly if they come in running for help.

An unexpected encounter

Officers Mercado and Tavera, members of the LAPD Hollywood division, found themselves in an unexpected pursuit one October day in 2019. However, instead of chasing criminals, they were being pursued by a little chocolate-colored puppy.

This abandoned pup started following the officers on Hobart Boulevard, seemingly aware that they could provide assistance. Determined and persistent, the puppy made it clear that he wouldn’t give up until they addressed his situation.

Mercado and Tavera quickly realized the significance of the pup’s presence and decided to take action. They scooped him up and brought him to the police station to ensure his safety. To honor the street where they discovered him, they named him “Hobart.”

The search is ON

Considering it unusual for such a young pup to be wandering alone, the officers took it upon themselves to investigate whether Hobart had escaped from home or had been deliberately abandoned. They wanted to determine if there was an owner desperately searching for their furry friend.

Officer Mercado became particularly fond of Hobart during this process, and their bond caught the attention of many social media users after the LAPD shared a post about the heartwarming incident. People eagerly followed the story, curious to know what would happen to the adorable pup.

Initially, the LAPD took Hobart to a rehoming shelter, but much to everyone’s delight, Officer Mercado couldn’t bear to part with him.

Time to give Hobart his forever home and forever family

Officer Mercado decided to adopt Hobart as his own companion and provided the pup with a loving and permanent home for the adorable pup.

But the story didn’t end there! The shelter provided an eagerly anticipated update on Hobart (formerly known as “Fidzgit” at the shelter).

The puppy had grown into a loving and lively companion, enjoying playtime with his puppy cousins and spending hours chewing on toys. Although he was still learning potty training, he cherished his time outdoors, particularly romping around in the grass.

Just look at that happy little face and those adorable, oversized ears!

Creating beautiful memories

Now, Hobart and his owner spend their days cuddling together, creating a bond that will last a lifetime. It’s evident that Hobart is forever grateful to Officer Mercado for rescuing him from a life on the streets.

Given Officer Mercado’s profession, many people suggested that Hobart could potentially join the LAPD’s K-9 unit, providing an opportunity for him to spend more time with his beloved owner. However, due to his small size, Hobart is not suitable for such a role.

Nevertheless, it’s safe to say that Hobart is content with his current situation. He’s surrounded by love and care, and his days are filled with joy and happiness.
