Brave Bernese Mountain puppy courageously defends owner from evil lemon
Cavanaugh is the name of the very brave Bernese Mountain dog featured in this viral video clip. A few years ago he fought valiantly in a ferocious battle against a fierce rival, a lemon.
A sour-tasting and deeply troubling lemon.
It’s still not clear who came out the victor in this lemon vs. canine conflict, but one thing we know for sure is that no other members of this dog’s family fell victim to the sneaky, sour tactics of the devious lemon.

Puppies, like children, have little in the way of lived experience with anything. People who have been alive longer have no doubt had the experience of tasting a lemon and know what to expect.
In Cavanaugh’s clip, it’s clear he’s never tasted a lemon before.
He was deeply upset with the experience.
You are not supposed to eat lemons like you would an apple, an orange, or other fruit. They don’t taste good that way. Rather, you are supposed to cut them up into little slices and put them on the rim of your glass of iced tea. That is what nature intended.

To a dog, however, there is nothing that differentiates a lemon from other fruit at first glance or sniff. There is nothing to warn them that they shouldn’t bite right into it.
In the video, all seems well up until it becomes clear the sour lemon taste has begun impacting the dog.
There is little they can do at this point to remedy the situation.
All the dog knows at this point is that his mouth tastes sour and he doesn’t like it. Cavanaugh barked at the lemon, made himself big in front of the lemon, and did whatever he could to show the lemon that he was the alpha in the situation. Sadly, this did nothing to get the sour taste out of his mouth.
The lemon’s response to Cavanaugh was not as complex.
It just sat there being a lemon.
There are plenty of videos on YouTube of young human puppies (often called children) eating lemons for the first time. All these boring children can think of to do is cry. Puppies are more proactive, they look for solutions to the problem.
Cavanaugh’s first instinct is to sniff the lemon.
If you are a dog, your go-to first step when checking out anything is to give it a good smell. That’s what Cavanaugh decided to do at first to get acquainted with this new fruity food source.
Clearly, nothing seemed out of the ordinary at this point.
Then Cavanuagh eats the lemon.
Cavanaugh’s second instinct is not as good as his first. After smelling the lemon and realizing it was food, he bit right in. That’s a flaw in dog evolution. Not everything that is food should be eaten, especially lemons.
The lemon fought back against the dog by delivering a sour and uncomfortable taste to Cavanaugh’s tastebuds.
Having too much lemon taste in your mouth is a most uncomfortable situation. It’s worse when you are a dog and can’t totally figure out what’s going on.
It’s Dog vs Lemon in a struggle of epic proportion.
Upon finding out the lemon was able to attack his mouth and digestive system, Cavanaugh sprung into hero mode. Nobody else in the family should fall victim to this and he needs to protect them.
Cavanaugh barked and pounced in the lemon’s direction, no doubt intimidating the inanimate fruit. He even tried biting it again, perhaps thinking that the lemon would concede defeat and stop creating a bitter taste.
When all else had failed, Cavanaugh looked to his human owners to see if they could help. They seemed to find this whole thing hilarious, however.
The battle continues.
Cavanaugh tried aerial moves, attacks from the ground, and all other forms of puppy pouncing one can think of.
In response, the lemon continued to simply remain a lemon.
Additional footage was released.
Life must be so confusing when you are a puppy. At least there are long naps to be had during the day. Sometimes even your owners play pranks on you.
Additional footage of this encounter was released. In the moments before the first video began, it turns out the human owner actually offered this lemon to Cavanaugh.
You can bet the dog will be mighty cautious of accepting similar gifts in the future.
