Unwanted puppy gets second chance at a happy life with nifty LEGO wheelchair
Animals can be born with disabilities. These abnormalities can affect not just their lives but humans’ view towards them as well.
A puppy named Grace was born with a birth defect.
She was born without front legs.
Upon seeing how weird she looked, her owners threw her out in a heartbeat.
When she Gracie was found, she had maggots around her eyes and feet. There were maggots on her feet and tail as well. She looked so unwell.
Fortunately, someone came to the rescue.
The vet who nursed Gracie back to health asked the help of a local rescue organization called Mostly Mutts Animal Rescue.
The Georgia-based organization took the poor dog in as they looked for people who’d be willing to keep her forever.
A loving family adopted the puppy.
It didn’t take a long time for Gracie to find her forever home. The Turley family, who runs the shelter, decided to keep her for good.
Gracie didn’t have a hard time getting along with her fur siblings.
Just like her, they also had disabilities.
One of them has three legs while another is paralyzed in his hind legs.
Although Gracie was doing alright with just her two hind legs, her new mom, Tammy, wanted to make her feel better.
Tammy felt worried that Gracie would get injured if she kept using just her two hind legs. So, she asked for the help of 12-year-old Dylan who was a volunteer at the shelter.
They planned to make a wheelchair for Gracie. Unfortunately, the puppy wasn’t eligible for a wheelchair fitting yet. Because of that, they had to come up with an alternative.
So, Dylan creates a makeshift wheelchair out of Legos.
It was the perfect solution.
With Legos, they were able to make a wheelchair that’s affordable. Plus, it’s easy to readjust to the needs of a growing puppy.
It took some time for Gracie to get used to her new accessory.
“The first couple of times, it took her a minute to figure it out, but we ended up getting little pieces of hot dog and when she smelled those, she took off,” Tammy shared.
Gracie grew quickly so Dylan had to build a second wheelchair for her.
This time, it was higher so it could lift up the puppy more. Soon, the family realized that she needed a wheelchair with bigger wheels, and that’s exactly what they gave her.
After a year, Gracie was finally able to get an adult wheelchair.
Because of it, she was able to grow up just like any other dog. She’s happy and healthy.
Most of the time, she’s running around after toys and balls with her equally adorable siblings.
Birth Defects in Puppies
The causes of birth defects in newborn animals can vary. Others have them due to hereditary issues and maternal infectious diseases during pregnancy. Exposure to chemical toxins, like carbaryl, can also cause birth defects.
To ensure the health of the pregnant pets as well as their babies, it’s important for owners to keep their pets away from infectious diseases, contaminants, and medications during pregnancy.
Being familiar with birth defects that run in certain breeds and family lines is important, too. That way, people can adopt specific strategies when it comes to breeding.
