The best siblings look out for one another and provide each other with the support to get through difficult situations. And not just human siblings.
Star and Denver had a very difficult start to life. But Star knows that Denver will always be there for her and vice versa.
Star, Denver, their mother and their six siblings came into the world in late 2019. Unfortunately, the owner refused to accept the litter of puppies. So they took the mother and her babies and dumped them in some empty looking place in rural Louisiana.
The mother did all that she could to protect her babies, but she realized that they were in a bad situation.
Luckily, a family spotted the dog and her babies and took them in.
The family became attached to the dogs and ensured that they were all healthy and well-fed. Pretty soon, they saw that all of the puppies were becoming energetic young animals. But two of them in particular, Star and Denver, were inseparable.
The family realized that they couldn’t keep nine dogs in their home. So they called up a rescue organization.
After some discussion, the family agreed to adopt the mother dog, and surrender the puppies, as puppies are more adoptable.
When the shelter took the puppies in, they too thought that Star and Denver’s attachment was adorable but strange. What was making Denver look out for Star so often? Then they learned the truth.
They tested Star and learned that she was deaf and almost blind. Denver had been the first of Star’s siblings to notice this, and as soon as he learned about Star’s conditions, he became her guardian.
Over the weeks, Denver and Star warmed the hearts of everyone in the shelter.
Seeing the two dogs play, live and give affection to one another was one of the most life-affirming things that they had ever seen.
“Star will follow Denver to the bed, to when it’s time to eat and to when it’s time to go out and play.” – Shelter volunteer.
The shelter soon realized that separating Star and Denver was not an option.
If they ever had to take Denver for a check-up without Star, the two dogs would get incredibly depressed. And when they got reunited, they’d be so, so happy. Clearly, they needed to be adopted into a home together.
Luckily, after just under a month in the shelter, Star and Denver found their own forever home. Sheri and Art Armenbdriz had heard about the two inseparable dogs and decided that they could give them safe and happy lives.
To help the couple adapt to life with a special needs dog, the shelter is going to provide a range of specialized training. This will ensure that Star has the best possible opportunity to feel safe and secure, and Denver will be able to see that his new parents care for his sister as much as he does.
The center also gave the new owners a giant thank you card signed by the shelter volunteers and a basket of dog toys.
Star is incredibly lucky to have a brother like Denver! He got her through the hard times, and now they can be happy together.
