Rescue puppy is seeing-eye dog for blind, deaf sister and never leaves her side

Every dog needs a best friend, especially a blind one, and it definitely looks like Star and Denver were absolutely made to be around each other.

At first glance, these three-month-old pups look like two normal dogs, even though they’re quite large for their age. They’re terrier mixes and love running around, unleashing all of their energy before they cuddle up together when they’re tired. These two siblings have a bond for life.

However, there definitely is something special about their relationship: Star is both deaf and almost completely blind and relies on her brother to interact with the world around her.

“When Star seems lost, Denver will run over to her and check in with her,” Jackie Kelleher of the Helen Woodward Animal Center in San Diego said to The Dodo.

“They like to play with each other, play tumble, play with rope toys and chew on stuffed toys.”

Guide dogs for humans who are blind are common, but Denver will absolutely make sure that his canine sister is safe and comfortable and doesn’t mind being her eyes and ears at all.

Even though Star definitely hasn’t had the best of luck regarding her health, she’s definitely lucky to have such an amazing brother who is willing to go through great lengths for her. The blind pup just knows that Denver is always right there by her side!

As mentioned above, these two were rescue puppies and were harshly abandoned by their previous owners.

Apparently, they were completely unwanted and their human owners simply decided to dump them somewhere in Louisiana, as if they were pieces of trash. Star and Denver weren’t alone – mom and eight of her pups were forced to live on the streets.

Luckily, a kind woman gave all of them a second chance.

She had found the mommy dog and her litter and cared for them a little while until a rescue center could help out. The animal organization said that they’d do their best to find all of them a warm forever home after they were fully nursed.

However, they realized that they couldn’t really take care of all of the pups, so they reached out to their colleagues at the Helen Woodward Animal Center for help.

HWAC was already preparing to transport 31 other young dogs across the country to get them to their animal center on the west coast, and they agreed to take Star and Denver along for the ride. These two would never want to be separated!

During the whole trip and for the first few days, nobody noticed that Star was actually a special needs pup.

They noticed that she behaved differently, didn’t engage the other puppies as much and felt overwhelmed by what was happening. The poor thing was just trying to figure out what was going on with her limited senses.

Luckily, Denver was always there to comfort her.

“Denver would come running back to love on Star and let her know he was there.”

The way that Denver is so protective of his sister is absolutely heartwarming and adorable. She can always count on her big brother!

“He does this by nudging her. Star can also smell him and if she is lost, she will move around the room until she runs into him.

When she moves to a new location, she moves very slowly putting one paw out cautiously in front of the other and she ‘maps’ out the area around her. Denver will always be vigilant of her needs even while they are around humans.”

Health-wise, Star and Denver are currently doing just fine and are waiting to find their forever homes. When they do – they’ll stay together, as HWAC won’t allow them to get adopted separately.
