Puppy’s overprotectiveness of sister leads shelter staff to realize she’s special needs
Two puppies went viral last year – when they were just a few months old – for their heartwarming story.
Terrier mix pups Star and Denver had already been through a lot, and things didn’t start off so great.
They were dumped on the side of the road in rural Louisiana along with their mother and six other siblings before making their way across the country to San Diego to enter a shelter that could care for them and find them a good home.
A second chance at life
Mom found a home, but the shelter was overcrowded with other animals in need. They had no room for the puppies.
Fortunately, the Helen Woodward Animal Center stepped in.
The Woodward Center made arrangements for all of the puppies in the litter (AND 31 other shelter animals) to make the 1,900-mile trip to California.
Despite being blind, the staff soon realized Star could use her other senses to navigate the world.
The problem is, the other puppies weren’t interested in playing with her.
Well, except Denver. He would often break off from the pack to check on his sister.
Sweet siblings
It was obvious to the Center staff that Denver and Star would need to be adopted together. Jessica Gercke, the spokesperson for the Center, told CBS8 News:
“Even though there were eight of them Denver was really sticking near her, guiding her around. She was depending on him.”
How sweet is this little guy?
And Denver always made sure that Star knew when she was no longer alone.
“He does this by nudging her. Star can also smell him and if she is lost, she will move around the room until she runs into him.”
Jackie Kelleher, social media manager at HWAC, explained to The Dodo that Star was perfectly capable of playing, it’s just that only Denver would treat her like a fellow puppy.
“When Star seems lost, Denver will run over to her and check in with her. They like to play with each other, play tumble, play with rope toys and chew on stuffed toys.”
“When she moves to a new location, she moves very slowly putting one paw out cautiously in front of the other and she ‘maps’ out the area around her. Denver will always be vigilant of her needs even while they are around humans.”
Soon after arriving at the shelter, Star and Denver became local celebrities in the hopes that someone would adopt them.
Who wouldn’t want to offer these happy, healthy, pups a forever home?
Of course, they would need a very special home because of Star’s special needs. But generous pet owners of blind and deaf dogs chimed in to help potential adopters know what they were in for.
And while it took a few months, they finally found some loving humans to take them in!
Star and Denver now live in Encinitas California with a loving couple willing and capable of caring for them.
We love a happy ending!
And look at this big, happy stretch on the new family sofa – we’d say someone acclimated to their new home just fine.
