Puppy with six legs gets adopted by a bullied teen who felt different too

We all have our differences. Some are external. Others are internal. This puppy and teenager both have visible differences, and some have judged them for this.
Roo is a labrador puppy who is unique. Her owners gave her the name Roo because she always hops around on her back legs.
You can guess what animal that activity reminded the owners of.
The puppy hops around on her back legs for a simple reason. She was born with six legs.
Her two extra legs are on her front. The extra legs “split” out at the puppy’s elbows, causing her movement to be impaired.
Roo was born at a breeder’s home. Luke Salmon, who is 15, spotted the puppy online and showed her to his mom, Lauren.
Lauren could tell that Luke wanted to take the puppy in because, like Luke, she was different.
For years, Luke had been bullied at school for a condition that he couldn’t control. He has psoriasis.
Psoriasis makes skin cells multiply significantly faster than in an average person. It causes red scaly patches on different parts of the skin.
The condition flares up and recedes with time. And whenever Luke experienced a flare-up of psoriasis, other kids would make fun of him. This has really had a terrible effect on his self-esteem.
“Luke feels like the odd one out because of his condition, and now he’s got a best friend to match.” – Lauren Salmon.
Luke and Roo bonded the second that they met.
During the first few weeks at her new home, Roo was super excited, just like any puppy when they find a loving family.
Her extra legs didn’t stop her from dashing all over the home and playing with Luke at any opportunity.
Lauren also noticed that Roo had a strong therapeutic effect on Luke. His confidence levels soon grew exceptionally.
While Luke and Lauren were happy to accept Roo as she was, they did look into the possibility of surgery on the dog. This was only to see if they could improve her mobility. After all, hopping around all day did take a lot of energy.
They discovered that it wasn’t possible to operate on Roo’s extra legs.
Because of this news, the family has been looking for other alternatives to enhance Roo’s mobility. They are currently looking to see if anyone can manufacture some custom wheels that they could fit onto her for walks.
Whatever happens, Luke and Lauren will give Roo the best possible life. Roo goes to sleep in Luke’s bed every single night. The dog hates to be apart from the teenager.
The term for a human or an animal having extra limbs is polymelia. There have been a few other notable cases of polymelia in dogs.
For instance, in 2009, a woman from North Carolina saved a five-legged puppy named Lilly from a Coney Island freak show. A vet in New York City thought that the woman’s rescue was so noble that he offered to perform a surgery to remove the extra limb for free.
Hopefully, stories like these will convince more people to adopt special needs dogs!
