Puppy thrown out in trash because he is “different” finally finds forever home

While not always the case, in some instances where a puppy is found to have a birth defect, they are discarded like so much trash. From such a sad beginning, one little puppy has risen above his disability to triumph. He was able to find a forever home with a loving family who accepted him regardless of his shortcomings.

The tiny puppy, named Petey, was found on a wet blanket in the park, discarded by his former owner. Rushed to the Sacramento SPCA, Petey was abandoned because he has a brain condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. Dogs affected by the condition have a problem with moving normally, often failing to maintain their balance, posture, or coordination.

Petey was found with another puppy, that sadly ended up passing away. Petey was covered in dirt and abrasions and was cold and trembling when he was found and taken to the Sacramento SPCA by a mother and son who happened by him on a walk in the park.

Fortunately, dogs with the condition can learn to move like normal with a combination of physical therapy and love. The staff at the Sacramento SPCA were determined to help Petey and never gave up on him. They made him do physical therapy every day and before too long he was eating and playing, just like a regular puppy.

After Petey could get around better, he was placed in a foster home to recover even further. His foster mom placed him in a small, inflatable pool so that he could continue to grow stronger and play without hurting himself. All was well until Petey bit a hole in the pool.

Finally, the day arrived when Petey was ready to be adopted. The SPCA explained to any potential adopters that Petey would need a home with parents who could give him the patient he needed to thrive. The shelter explained it in more detail in a post online:

“This 2-month-old Bully mix has cerebellar hypoplasia. What does that mean? Well, he’s not super coordinated and it takes him a while to get where he needs to go. This condition is permanent, but animals tend to learn to compensate over time. He’ll need a home that can keep him safe and secure and willing to go the distance.”

And while the shelter received plenty of application to adopt Petey, he was eventually adopted by a pair of new parents who loved him regardless of any condition he might have. They gave him everything he needed and now he is living his best life. For the life of them, they can’t understand how someone didn’t want him and felt the need to throw him away.

Petey is a perfect example of why you should never give up on a dog

Petey was determined to be more like a regular dog and worked hard to get there. He is a perfect example of why you should never give up on a dog, even if their condition seems untreatable at first.
