Daughter pulls off light-hearted yet elaborate quarantine prank on parents

There are very few pranks we can get away with these days that arenā€™t in bad taste. A crisis is rarely the right time to mess with peopleā€™s heads.

But a lighthearted trick played by Kristen Vogler on her parents is making the news because itā€™s both fun and clever ā€“ and everyone got a good laugh.

On April 14th, she posted photos from the nearly 12-day switcheroo she pulled off on her parentsā€™ photo wall and the pics have been liked and shared tens of thousands of times since then.

She explained the premise:

ā€œI started poorly recreating the framed photos on our wall with top notch art supplies, aka ā€“ a box of crayons. Every day I replaced a new photo with a new, and terrible, crayon drawing.ā€

Hereā€™s the familyā€™s unaltered photo wall:

Vogler thought it would take perhaps a day or two, at most, for her parents to notice that she had replaced the beloved family photos with her crayon drawings, but it took them 11 days (and 7 hours)! They even use the door to the left of the photo wall multiple times a day!

But weā€™ll admit, the first few days might be hard to spot since she started in the bottom corner.

Hereā€™s the change that went unnoticed on Day 1:

By Day 5, the drawings still hadnā€™t drawn any attention (no pun intended), so Vogler made some more obvious changes.

By Day 8, there were more drawings on the wall than original photos, but still no peep from her parents.

Vogler told Bored Panda how the prank came about:

ā€œSo I love doing harmless pranks in general and was talking to my younger sister about a prank someone pulled that involved replacing family photos with Nicolas Cage. But I donā€™t have a color printer, so knew that wouldnā€™t work. I happened to have a box of crayons and it all sort of clicked from there. That was several months ago, however. It wasnā€™t until COVID-19 that I found myself with more time on my hands and I actually could start it.ā€

Finally, after wondering if it might take weeks for them to notice, Vogler decided to start replacing the most obvious portraits on the left with drawings.

But hours after one of the final photos went up on Day 11, her mother noticed the drawings.

It turns out she had sensed something was up earlier, but simply thought she was having trouble with her eyesight!

At one point, mother Paula Vogler noticed that a photo of her own mother looked a little strange, but she chalked it up to needing new glasses.

ā€œIā€™m squinting and Iā€™m like, something looks kind of weird and all I thought really seriously was, ā€˜Oh I havenā€™t been to the eye doctor in a couple years, I should probably go!ā€™ā€ she told WHDH News.

The daring daughter managed to catch the moment her mother realized it was no mere optical illusion on video.

ā€œI heard the initial ā€œwaitā€¦ whatā€ and went running over in time to capture this moment. I like to think they noticed because I replaced my senior photo and of course they look at the picture of their favorite daughter the most right?ā€ she explained.

That video has now been viewed nearly half a million times!
