Water in Venice goes crystal-clear – unanticipated effect of quarantine
Life has been changing since the Coronavirus took the world by storm. More and more actions are being taken by political leaders around the globe to slow the advancement of the virus. People don’t generally adapt to change very well, and during this pandemic the question about people’s mental health is serious.
New changes to our lives are happening nearly every day. It’s very hard to imagine at the moment anything positive coming from all of this. But that’s why we are here to shed a little light on the situation.
Italy has been one of the countries hit the hardest by the Covid-19 virus. They have endured, and are enduring some of the most strict orders. They have removed people from the streets and they are not allowed to leave their homes unless for food or hospital needs.
Just prior to this pandemic, Venice had been trying to figure out how to deal with being overrun by tourism. It’s one of the most popular destinations on Earth, seeing between 26-30 million visitors annually. That’s a lot of people!
So what happens when all those people stop coming?
Nature has found its way back to Venice.
The canals are the way Italians and tourists get through Venice. Aside from walking, it’s the only transportation method available. They are heavily used. But now without being used, all of the canals have become crystal clear. You can see the bottom like it a swimming pool.
Small fish have been revealed throughout the canals and appear to be thriving.
However, Venice mayor’s office is quick to debunk the rumors that the fish can be seen due to the changed and improved quality of water.
“The water now looks clearer because there is less traffic on the canals, allowing the sediment to stay at the bottom,” a spokesman told CNN news. “It’s because there is less boat traffic that usually brings sediment to the top of the water’s surface.”
Although water quality improvements aren’t the reason directly causing the clearing, pollution levels in Italy have improved and are allowing the city to breathe.
Through satellites, there has been a clear decrease in N02 levels in northern Italy.
The satellite Copernicus Sentinel-5P and its team measured that the reduced N02 in the Po Valley is most likely the result of reduced human pollution. Check out this satellite imaging:
These images are the difference in 1 month’s time of reduced human pollution.
“Maybe there needs to be a yearly month-long lockdown every year so nature gets a break,” one woman comments on Facebook.
“Above the worries of everybody, there’s always a positive impact that people don’t usually notice,” an optimist comments.
The Venetian Sea has also cleared. Dolphins are being seen coming closer into the bays. Swans are swimming in the canals. Seagulls aren’t relying on humans for food and killing off some of the rat population. They are natural predators, you know?
Things are quickly making an environmental comeback. Way faster than anyone would have thought. So in the midst of so much panic, and fear, you can look at these pictures at least, and see positive changes. There will always be a silver-lining to negative situations. And if the Earth that has been so kind to us gets a much-needed break, then maybe it’ll all be worth it in the end.
